Video Request via APIs

Introduction

Fleets can now request dashcam footage using Motive’s public API. This makes it easier to bring video retrieval into existing operational workflows, so teams can reduce manual effort and get footage faster when they need it.

What’s new?

Motive now supports public API access for video requests. With these APIs, fleets can:

  • request video for a vehicle or asset for a past point in time
  • check the status of a request while footage is being prepared
  • download footage once it is ready
  • view their remaining API video request quota

Video requests are processed asynchronously, which means the footage is prepared in the background and becomes available once processing is complete.

How does this help customers?

  • Automates video retrieval by connecting Motive to internal tools and workflows
  • Reduces manual effort by removing the need to request and download footage one case at a time from the dashboard
  • Speeds up investigations and operational follow-up for safety, compliance, and customer support teams
  • Makes it easier to support higher-volume workflows that depend on repeat video retrieval

How it works

  1. Obtain or confirm access to Motive’s public APIs.
  2. Submit a video request for a vehicle or asset for a past time window.
  3. Track the request status while the footage is being prepared.
  4. Download the footage once it becomes available.
  5. Monitor remaining quota using the quota endpoint.

Quotas and usage

Video requests made through the API are subject to usage limits. These limits help ensure reliable performance and responsible usage across fleets.

A company’s available quota can be checked directly through the API before making requests.

If your organization expects a higher volume of usage than the default allocation supports, please work with your account representative to request for it. In that review, Motive considers the customer’s expected usage, use case, and overall account context before approving updated limits or recommending a revised cap.

How to request a quota increase

If your fleet needs more API video request capacity, reach out to your Motive account representative with:

  • your company details
  • your expected usage
  • the workflow or use case you are trying to support
  • the level of increase you expect to need

Motive will review the request and confirm whether the requested limits can be supported as submitted or whether a revised limit is more appropriate.
