2022-July-25 Announcement: DRIVE Score Updates

    Release Date

    Starting July 25, 2022

    Introduction

Two DRIVE risk score enhancements are expected to be released on July 25, 2022. These enhancements will help you better coach drivers on speeding.

    1. Posted speed limits integration - The DRIVE score now evaluates speeding behavior based on posted speed limits instead of average traffic speed. While there should be no major changes to driver scores, DRIVE can now;

    • More accurately predict the likelihood of a driver to get into an accident.
    • Show how speeding events impact a driver’s score.

    2. Report speed limit inaccuracies - Managers can now dispute inaccurate speed limits on a speeding event. Disputes resolved within 4 weeks of the event will be removed from the DRIVE score.
These changes will apply to all future DRIVE score updates. For details check out these FAQs or refer to our DRIVE 101 for more tips on making your safety team more effective with DRIVE.

    FAQs

Q: How does the DRIVE risk score work?

The Motive DRIVE risk score analyzes the full contextual data that could impact driving behavior—like road conditions, vehicle class, and the behaviors of other drivers on the road. As a result, our model is able to reward positive behaviors, just as much as it penalizes high-risk ones. DRIVE benchmarks all behavior across Motive’s network of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to provide an objective measure of driver risk.

Q: What are the specific changes being made?

    • Posted speed limits integration - The DRIVE score now evaluates speeding behavior based on posted speed limits instead of average traffic speed.
    • Report speed limit inaccuracies - Managers can now dispute inaccurate speed limits on a speeding event. Disputes resolved within 4 weeks of the event will be removed from the DRIVE score.

Q: Why is Motive making changes to the score?

By evaluating speeding behavior based on posted speed limits, DRIVE can more accurately predict the likelihood of a driver to get into an accident. Additionally, Fleet managers can better understand how speeding events impact a driver’s score.

Q: How will this impact drivers’ DRIVE scores?
This will not impact historical scores. This change only applies to future DRIVE scores starting 7/25. There may be minimal score fluctuation in the first few weeks after the change.

Q: What is the DRIVE definition of a speeding event?
By default, Motive records a speeding event when a vehicle goes 5 mph over the posted speed limit for at least 1 minute. We use the same definition to calculate speeding inputs for the DRIVE score so we can objectively compare speeding behavior across fleets.

Q: Can I set a custom speeding threshold?
Yes, you can set a custom threshold for speeding events that appear on the Speeding tab of the Safety Hub. However, this custom threshold will not affect the speeding inputs for the DRIVE score.

Go to Admin > Company > Speed Settings to set your custom threshold.

Q: How can I view all of the speeding events evaluated by the DRIVE model?
You can check the “Show all DRIVE events” box on the Speeding tab under the Safety Hub of your dashboard.

Q: What if I find a data inaccuracy with a speeding event?
Fleet managers with the “Report speed limit issues” permission can submit a speeding dispute if they discover an inaccurate speed limit. Approved disputes will be noted on the speeding event detail page. If the dispute was submitted within 4 weeks of the event date, the speeding event will be removed from the DRIVE score calculation.

Q: When will this update be released?
    July 25th, 2022.

Q: How should I message this change to drivers?
A new DRIVE score enhancement will be rolled out 07/25 to all drivers. The DRIVE score now evaluates speeding behavior based on posted speed limits instead of average traffic speed. While there may be some score fluctuation in the first few weeks, there should be no major changes to driver scores. Drivers can better understand how speeding events affect their scores.

Q: Can I still use DRIVE and not utilize the speeding product? What is the impact?
Yes. If the speeding tool is disabled, you can still use the DRIVE score but you will only see in aggregate how speeding impacts your score week over week. You will not be able to coach specific speeding events.
