The Motive Asset Gateway Solar provides next-generation GPS tracking for trailers, equipment, and other assets. It is designed to help fleets understand the location of their assets, maximize utilization, prevent unauthorized use, and simplify dispatching to save time and money across fleet operations.
The installation of an Asset Gateway Solar differs between trailer types and power sources. This article will cover the various aspects to look for when installing your Asset Gateway Solar.
Installation Requirements
Check the following things if you plan to utilize solar power:
- Asset Gateway's solar panel has a clear line of sight to the sun.
- When selecting a location for installation, make sure the placement does not interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle and cause damage to the Asset Gateway.
- Peel the sticker on the solar panel and check if the LED on the Asset Gateway unit lights up green.

Mount Plate Installation
Note: Place the mounting plate for the Asset Gateway on the outer walls of the trailer to avoid GPS problems. Placing the Asset Gateway on the inner walls can be a hindrance to good GPS signals causing issues in tracking.
- Use the M3 Screws to attach the Asset Gateway to the mount.
Installing Asset Gateway Solar to Dry Vans
- Attach the Asset Gateway to the Mount Plate using the four M3 screws provided.
- Install the Mount Plate with the attached Asset Gateway near the top of the front bulkhead (the side closest to the tractor) using the four self-tapping screws (with washers).
- Make sure the solar panel has an unobstructed view of the sky.
Installing Asset Gateway Solar to Reefers
It is necessary to connect the Asset Gateway via the power cable to the refrigerated trailer unit. Once the unit is cable-powered, it could be installed on top of the refrigeration unit.
Installing Asset Gateway Solar to Flatbeds
- Attach the Asset Gateway to the Mount Plate using the four M3 screws provided.
- Install the Mount Plate with the attached Asset Gateway near the top of the front bulkhead (the side closest to the tractor) using the four self-tapping screws (with washers).
- Make sure the solar panel has an unobstructed view of the sky.
Installing Asset Gateway Solar on Tankers
- Identify a mounting spot on the top of the tanker along the walkway or roll bar that is away from any loading or unloading areas.
- Install the Asset Gateway using the four self-tapping screws (with washers).
- You may use the Mount Plate to position the Asset Gateway so it has an unobstructed view of the sky.
Additional Notes
Below are three incorrect installations:
- Solar-powered unit installed without a solar mount.
- The solar peel sticker was not removed.
- The unit was installed on a curved surface and not a flat surface.
FAQs
How does the asset or vehicle pairing feature work?
This feature allows the nearby assets to automatically get paired with the vehicles. It enables the fleet admins to speculate which vehicle is attached to which asset at one place under Fleet View.
| Note: When an asset starts moving, the Asset Gateway service looks at the location, speed, and direction of the company’s every vehicle. |
Pre-requisites for automatic asset or vehicle pairing
For a successful pairing, ensure your asset or vehicle fulfills the following criteria:
- The vehicle should be located within 2 miles of the asset.
- The vehicle should be moving at 5 mph or more.
- The asset should be consecutively moving for more than 5 minutes at 5mph or more.
- The vehicle and asset should travel in the same direction plus/minus 45 degrees.
- Asset Gateway Mini must be cable-powered.
- Asset Gateway Max battery percentage should be above 50%.
Pairing Conditions:
- If there’s only 1 matched vehicle, then it's used as a paired vehicle for an asset.
- If an asset stops, then the currently matched vehicle (if any) is unassigned from the asset.
- If no matched vehicles are found or there is more than 1 match, then the pairing logic is repeated when the next Asset Gateway ping is received, usually within the next 1 to 5 minutes.
