    Introduction

Motive detects unsafe driving behaviors from the AI and Smart Dashcams in addition to the Vehicle Gateway. Read below to learn how Motive defines each unsafe behavior.

How does detecting unsafe behaviors help you

    • Reduce liability on the road with increased visibility into unsafe behavior for each driver
    • Coach effectively with video evidence
    • Plan proper training for drivers to improve their performance
    • Improve overall company performance

    Unsafe behaviors overview

Motive divides unsafe behaviors into 4 main categories:

    Behavior Category Definition Behaviors

    Traffic Signals & Signs

Violations of posted signs and signals in local, state, or federal jurisdictions.
    • Ran a red light
    • Ran a stop sign
    • Failure to yield
    • Passing violation
    • Improper lane usage
    • Railroad crossing
    • Speeding
    Core Risk

Fundamental driving principles with high correlation to accidents.

    • Unsafe lane change
    • Close following
    • Lane cutoff
Awareness Driver conduct that can potentially impact their driving.
    • Distraction
    • Drowsiness
    • Delayed response
    • Smoking
    • Cell phone usage
    • Seat belt violation
Harsh Driving Behaviors generated due to sudden changes in direction and speed.
    • Braking
    • Accelerating
    • Cornering

    Ran a red light

Not stopping at a red light or stopping after the stop line causes a  ‘Running a red light’ violation.

    Ran a stop sign

When approaching a stop sign, a safety event will be triggered if speed doesn’t go below 6 mph within 7 seconds of the stop sign being visible to the camera.

The same definition is used to determine when to alert the driver via an in-cab alert through the AI dashcam. In-cab alerts can be managed through company settings

    Failure to yield

Events where a driver fails to slow down or come to a complete stop for another motorist or pedestrian when they have a legal obligation to do so, it is known as failure to yield.

    Passing violation

A no-passing zone legally prohibits drivers from using the opposite lane of traffic to pass other vehicles. These zones are indicated by a solid (generally yellow) dividing line on the road. If a driver is seen overtaking another vehicle or shifting to another lane of traffic, the event is marked as ‘Passing in a no passing zone’.

    Speeding

Speeding occurs when a driver drives over the posted speed limit on a road. By default, Motive generates a speeding event when the vehicle has driven 6 mph over the posted speed limit for more than 1 minute. This threshold can be changed in company settings

Drivers can be alerted via an in-cab alert through the Smart or AI Dashcam. An in-cab alert for speeding will fire once the driver’s speed has exceeded a particular threshold.

In-cab alert for speeding above the posted speed limit will fire once the driver's speed has exceeded a threshold set up by Fleet Admins/Managers for a set period of time. This can be configured within company settings.

    Core Risk

    Unsafe Lane change

When the vehicle changes its lanes in an unsafe manner, an event is generated as ‘unsafe lane change’. Motive flags unsafe lane changes when the driver changes lanes without maintaining a safe distance, is too fast for conditions, swerves between lanes, or changes lanes erratically.

    Close following

When a driver is observed as not maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front, the video is tagged as Close Following. Motive defines close following when the driver has a following distance of 0.7 seconds or less is maintained for at least 10 seconds above 35 mph.

The same definition is used to determine when to alert the driver via an in-cab alert through the AI dashcam. In-cab alerts can be managed through company settings

This is configurable for fleets based on contacting our Support team.

    Lane cutoff

When another vehicle cuts off the driver by entering and occupying your safe following distance, the video is marked as ‘Lane Cutoff’. This highlights the positive recognition of the driver’s action to quickly adapt to the changing situation on the road by applying brakes or changing lanes to avoid a potential collision.

    Awareness

    Distraction

When the driver is not fully attentive to what’s happening on the road, the video is marked as ‘Distraction’. There are different kinds of distractions including visual (not looking at the road), manual (not keeping hands on the steering wheel) or cognitive (take the mind off of driving) distraction. An event is generated when the driver is looking down for at least 5 seconds above 10mph.

The same definition is used to determine when to alert the driver via an in-cab alert through the AI dashcam. In-cab alerts can be managed through company settings

This is configurable for fleets based on contacting our Support team.

    Drowsiness

When the driver seems to be sleeping behind the wheel, or his head is dropping to the sides in drowsiness, yawning, or blinking too frequently, an event is generated.

    Smoking

Videos are marked as ‘Smoking’ when the driver is holding, smoking, or lighting a cigarette or vape.

    Cell phone usage

Cell phone usage is triggered whenever a driver uses a phone for at least 5 seconds above 25 mph.

The same definition is used to determine when to alert the driver via an in-cab alert through the AI dashcam. In-cab alerts can be managed through company settings

This is configurable for fleets based on contacting our Support team.

    Seat belt violation

A seat belt violation is triggered when the driver or passenger is not wearing a seatbelt for at least 5 seconds above 25mph, an event is generated.

In-cab alerts are triggered through the AI dashcam when a seatbelt is unbuckled for at least 15s above 10mph. In-cab alerts can be managed through company settings

This is configurable for fleets based on contacting our Support team.

    Harsh Driving

    Braking

Hard braking can immensely reduce the performance of the vehicle and could also be a reason that could result in potential loss of life on the road. It could also mean that the driver is not attentive on the road. Hard braking events are generated when the driver crosses a threshold set above 6.1 mph/s to 10.1 mhp/s.

Threshold and in-cab alert settings can be managed through company settings.

    Accelerating

Motive generates an accelerating event when the driver crosses a threshold set above 6.1 mph/s and 10.1 mph/s.

Threshold and in-cab alert settings can be managed through company settings.

    Cornering

When a driver is turning a corner at high speed it is not only a risk for the driver but also for the other commuters on the road. Motive generates a cornering event when the driver crosses a threshold set above 6.1 mph/s to 10.1 mph/s.

Threshold and in-cab alert settings can be managed through company settings.
