Tracking fuel usage by driver and vehicle helps improve efficiency and reduce costs. Motive’s Driver and Vehicle lists offer detailed insights so you can take targeted action to boost performance across your fleet.

Overview

The Driver and Vehicle lists in the Motive Dashboard offer a clear view of fuel usage across your entire fleet, helping you monitor performance and make data-driven decisions.

  • Targeted insights: Easily identify drivers or vehicles with higher-than-average fuel usage, allowing you to focus on underperforming areas that may need improvement or attention.
  • Improved coaching: Use detailed, real-time fuel data to provide drivers with specific, actionable feedback and coaching on how to improve fuel efficiency during their routes.
  • Maintenance optimisation: Spot vehicles that are using more fuel than expected and flag them for maintenance reviews, helping prevent costly repairs and boosting overall fleet efficiency.

Managing Fuel Hub Driver details

  1. Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and click Fuel in the left-hand side menu. Then, click the Drivers tab.

The Driver List View provides a leaderboard of your fleet’s drivers across various fuel metrics to help you identify high and low-performing drivers.

The Driver List shows the following metrics:

  • Avg. / Mov. (MPG): The driver’s average and moving Kilometers per Liter performance.
  • Util.: The percentage of time the driver was actively driving or using PTO out of the total engine-run time.
  • Total Dist. (km): The total distance covered by the driver.
  • Fuel Vol. (liter) / Duration: Total fuel consumed and the duration of engine operation.
  • Idling (liter): Total fuel consumed while the vehicle was stationary with the engine running.
  • Cost (GBP): The total cost of fuel consumed by the driver.
  1. You can adjust the Date Range and set filters for Vehicle attributes, Vehicle, Driver, Distance, and Fuel data to narrow down the list of drivers whose fuel performance you want to observe.
  2. To view specific driver details, click a driver's name from the list. You will be taken to a page with in-depth insights about that driver’s fuel consumption performance over time.

Managing Fuel Hub Vehicle details

  1. Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard, click Fuel in the left-hand side menu, and then click the Vehicles tab.

The Vehicle List View provides a leaderboard of your fleet across various performance metrics to help identify high and low-performing vehicles.

The Vehicle List shows the following metrics:

  • Avg. / Mov. (KM/L): The vehicle's average and moving Kilometers per Liter performance.
  • Util.: The percentage of time the vehicle was driving or using PTO out of the total engine-run time.
  • Total Dist. (km): The total miles covered by the vehicle during the selected period.
  • Driving (liter) / Duration: Total fuel consumed while the vehicle was in motion and the total driving time.
  • Idling (liter) / Duration: Total fuel consumed and time spent while the vehicle was stationary with the engine running.
  • Odometer (mi): The current odometer reading for the vehicle.
  • Cost (GBP): The total cost of fuel consumed by the vehicle.
  • Fuel Type: The type of fuel used by the vehicle (e.g., Gasoline).
  1. You can adjust the Date Range and use filters for Vehicle attributes, Vehicle, Driver, Distance, and Fuel data to narrow down the specific vehicles you want to monitor.

  2. To view specific vehicle details, click on a vehicle's ID from the list. You will be directed to a page providing in-depth insights into that vehicle's fuel consumption performance compared to previous periods.

Understanding targeted fuel tracking

Monitoring performance at the driver and vehicle level helps you:

  • Pinpoint coaching opportunities using real-world data.
  • Detect recurring low MPG that may signal mechanical issues.
  • Replace guesswork with insights for measurable improvements.

How often is fuel data updated?

Fuel data updates in near real time as trips and transactions are recorded.

Can I filter by time period or specific metrics?

Yes. Use filters to customise your view by date range or metric type.

How can I use this data to coach drivers?

Identify drivers with low MPG or high idle time and use those patterns to guide coaching conversations and support improvements.

What if a vehicle consistently shows low MPG?

Flag the vehicle for a maintenance review, as consistently low MPG may indicate a mechanical issue.

Can I export the data?

Yes. All list views and detailed reports can be exported from the dashboard.

How can I filter idling events in the Fuel Drivers tab to specifically identify or exclude time spent idling at red lights?

In the Fuel Hub, idling is defined as time when the vehicle is stationary with the engine running, and the Fuel > Drivers tab shows Idling (gal) as total fuel consumed while the vehicle was stationary with the engine running, which means:

  • Short stops at red lights and in traffic are technically idling, but Motive only creates an idling event once the vehicle has been stationary with the engine running for more than a short threshold (about 2 minutes). 
  • Very brief stops (e.g., most red lights) typically do not appear as separate idling events. Longer stationary periods with the engine on do and will contribute to the idling metrics shown in Fuel > Drivers and Idling Events

Motive doesn’t have a specific red light filter, but you can focus on unnecessary idling by using the Idling Events and Contextual Idling tools:

  • Idling Events (Fuel > Idling Events) show each idling event with duration, location, geofence, and ambient temperature so you can distinguish necessary vs. wasteful idling. 
  • Contextual Idling Events adds filters for temperature bands, idling duration ranges, and geofences, so you can:
    • Filter out idling in known necessary locations (e.g., terminals, yards, specific customer sites).
    • Focus on long-duration idling outside these geofences and outside extreme temperatures, which is most likely waste. 
  • Idling alerts let you configure long-idling alerts so drivers and managers get notified in real time when an idling event exceeds your policy threshold.  

How do I benchmark my vehicle against similar classes across the Motive network?

Go to Fuel > Vehicles and use Vehicle attributes to filter by Class, Fuel Type, Make/Model, and Year. Then open a vehicle to view Vehicle vs. Other Vehicles, where you can compare against similar assets, Fleet benchmarks, and the Motive Average.
