Battery life implications of Locate My Asset feature

Asset Gateway 31.1 and lower versions

    • Enabling this feature results in a 40-50% reduction in battery life, from 5 years to approximately 3.6 years, even if the user doesn’t initiate any on-demand pings.
    • The feature is off by default. Customers must contact Motive Support to activate it.

    Asset Gateway 31.2 version

    • With this feature enabled, the device is expected to maintain a 5-year battery life.
    • The feature is on by default.

Optimizing battery life with Locate My Asset feature

Locate My Asset feature provides flexibility to obtain on-demand location updates. Some fleets may choose to reduce the frequency of scheduled pings since they may not require a scheduled ping every 12 hours. For instance, given the ability to request location on demand, they may reduce scheduled pings to a 24-hour or 48-hour interval, which can extend battery life.

Note: An occasional on-demand ping doesn’t materially affect battery life. Initiating an on-demand ping every day has the same effect on battery life as adding an additional scheduled ping per day. For example: increasing from 12h pings to 8h pings.
