Motive’s Asset Gateway Mini (AG-31) provides advanced power management, customizable battery settings, and features like on-demand location and utilization analytics. Understanding how the Asset Gateway Mini works helps you maximize battery life and improve asset tracking.
Overview
Asset Gateway Mini (AG-31) combines flexible power options with intelligent reporting to support assets in the field. They are designed to deliver location tracking while adapting to your operational needs.
- Uninterrupted power: Asset Gateway Mini automatically switches between cable and battery power. This ensures assets are always monitored, even when cable power is disconnected.
- Ping frequency: Cable-powered Asset Gateway Mini pings every minute to provide minute-by-minute location updates. Battery-powered Asset Gateway Mini pings every 8-24 hours based on user settings.
- Flexible battery settings: You can adjust ping rates to balance location accuracy with battery life. Longer ping intervals conserve battery life, while more frequent pings provide location updates at shorter intervals at the cost of reducing the battery life.
- On-demand location: With the Locate My Asset feature enabled, you can request immediate location updates in critical situations such as when an asset is lost or stolen.
Asset Gateway Mini power management
Cable power loss
- The Asset Gateway Mini automatically switches to battery mode when cable power stops working.
- When cable power returns, the device reverts to cable power automatically.
Battery-powered operation
- Current ping options for battery-powered Asset Gateway Mini are every 8, 12, or 24 hours.
- Fewer pings extend battery life, while more frequent pings through the Locate My Asset feature provide on-demand location with an impact on battery life.
| Note: Enabling Locate My Asset reduces expected battery life by ~25% for AG‑31.2+ and ~40% for AG‑31.1. These changes take effect after the feature is enabled and the device has gone through its next scheduled ping. |
Locate My Asset
The Locate My Asset feature allows fleet admins and managers to request immediate location updates from battery-powered Asset Gateway Mini devices, bypassing the standard ping interval.
Using Locate My Asset on the Motive Fleet App
- Log into the Motive Fleet App and go to Fleet.
- Use the search bar or filters to find your asset or select the asset from the given list.

FAQs
How can I adjust the battery ping rate?
Ping rates can be configured in device settings. For more details, see Changing Asset Gateway Mini’s check-in rate.
Does using Locate My Asset affect battery life?
Occasional use on AG-31.2 has little impact. Frequent use, or enabling it on AG-31.1, reduces battery life.
How does the tracker detect productive idling?
By monitoring auxiliary input voltage, the device distinguishes between active equipment use and simple idling
Why did the Locate My Asset (LMA) refresh option disappear on my Asset Gateway Mini?
The Locate My Asset feature is used to request an immediate location update from an Asset Gateway Mini. If the refresh option is unavailable, older AG Mini versions may require activation by Motive Support before LMA can be used. After activation, go to Fleet View > Live > Assets, select the asset, and click Refresh.
How long does it take for the Locate My Asset admin setting to take effect after I enable it?
Changes do not apply instantly. Once you enable Locate My Asset, each supported device must go through its next scheduled check‑in (ping) before the setting becomes active. After that ping, the Refresh button becomes available for that asset.
Does enabling Locate My Asset change my existing check‑in rate?
No. Your configured check‑in rate stays the same. Enabling Locate My Asset simply adds the option to request an on‑demand location refresh on top of your existing scheduled pings.
How does enabling the Locate My Asset setting affect Asset Gateway Mini’s battery life?
Enabling Locate My Asset reduces expected battery life for battery‑powered Asset Gateway Mini devices. It reduces expected battery life by ~25% for AG‑31.2+ and ~40% for AG‑31.1 devices. Frequent use of on‑demand refresh will consume more battery than occasional use.
Which devices support the Locate My Asset setting?
The company‑level Locate My Asset setting only applies to Asset Gateway Mini (AG‑31 series) devices. It is not supported on Asset Gateway Solar (AG‑55).
Can I turn the setting off later if I’m concerned about battery life?
Yes. You can return to Admin > Fleet View > Locate My Asset > Edit at any time to uncheck the setting or change which AG‑31 devices it applies to. The change will take effect after each device’s next scheduled check-in.
