Settings

Motive’s AG-31 series asset trackers provide advanced power management, customizable battery settings, and features like on-demand location and utilization analytics. Understanding how these options work helps you maximize battery life and improve asset tracking.

Overview

AG-31 trackers combine flexible power options with intelligent reporting to support assets in the field. They are designed to deliver uninterrupted tracking while adapting to your operational needs.

  • Uninterrupted power: The tracker automatically switches between cable and battery power with no loss of visibility. This ensures assets are always monitored, even when cable power is disconnected.
  • Flexible battery settings: You can adjust ping rates to balance location accuracy with battery life. Longer intervals conserve energy, while more frequent pings provide near real-time updates.
  • On-demand location: In critical situations, you can request immediate location updates. This feature is especially useful if an asset is lost or stolen.
  • Utilization analytics (coming soon): The AG-31 will soon provide insights into movement, engine hours, and auxiliary input usage. These metrics will help fleets understand how assets are being used and identify idle time patterns.

Power management

Cable power loss
  • The AG-31 automatically switches to battery mode with no interruption in tracking.
  • When cable power returns, the device reverts to cable power automatically.
Battery-powered operation
  • Current ping options: every 8, 12, or 24 hours.
  • Coming soon: every 3, 4, or 6 hours.

Fewer pings extend battery life, while more frequent pings provide closer-to-real-time data. Battery life estimates by ping rate are available in the AG-31.2 battery life table.

Locate My Asset

The Locate My Asset feature allows Fleet Admins and Fleet Managers to request immediate location updates from Asset Gateway 31 (Asset Gateway Mini) devices, bypassing the standard 12-hour ping interval. Additionally, with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) integration, users can now obtain an approximate location of AG-mini assets even when GPS data is unavailable. The app will automatically update to GPS coordinates when available.

  • Theft prevention
  • Locating misplaced assets
  • Conducting yard hunts on large job sites

Locate My Asset on the Motive Fleet App

1. Log in to the Motive Fleet App and tap Fleet.

2. Select an asset.

3. Tap Refresh to request the live location of the selected asset.

Note: Use this feature only when necessary, as frequent use shortens battery life.

Locate My Asset on the Motive Fleet Dashboard

1. Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and click Fleet View.

2. Click Live.

3. Click Refresh to request the live location of the selected asset.

Utilization and idling

Utilization metrics include

  • Movement tracking
  • Engine hours
  • Auxiliary input usage
  • Detailed idle time classification

Classifying idle time

  • Productive idling: When an asset is stationary but performing work, such as an excavator operating its boom. Detected through auxiliary input monitoring and tracked as useful operating time.
  • Unproductive idling: When an asset is running but not performing useful work, leading to wasted fuel.

A-Wire cable integration

  • Monitors voltage from up to three auxiliary lines.
  • Configurable voltage thresholds (High: 3–32V, Low: 0–0.3V).
  • Automatically classifies idle time as productive or unproductive.
  • Generates detailed idle time metrics for reporting.

Changing Asset Gateway Mini’s check-in rate

  1. Log into Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Assets.
  2. Click the three dots next to the desired asset with an Asset Gateway Mini.
  3. Open the asset’s profile and click Edit Asset.
  4. In the Asset Gateway Mini settings section, click Check-in Rate to view check-in rate options.
  5. Select the preferred check-in rate from the 4 options available: Every 8 hours, Every 12 hours, Every 24 hours, Every 48 hours, and click Save.
Note: Give the device one check-in cycle to implement the new command. The updated check-in frequency is sent to the Asset Gateway Mini the next time it checks in with the updated location.

Changing check-in rate for multiple devices at a time

  1. Log into Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Assets.
  2. Select multiple assets with AG Mini by marking the checkbox and click Edit.
  3. If more than one AG mini is selected, an option to bulk edit the Check-in Rate appears. Click Asset Gateway Mini: Check-in Rate.
  4. Select the preferred check-in rate from the 4 options available: Every 8 hours, Every 12 hours, Every 24 hours, Every 48 hours, and click Save.
Note: If the selection includes both the Asset Gateway Mini and Asset Gateway, the change in the check-in rate settings only applies to Asset Gateway Mini.

FAQs

How can I adjust the battery ping rate?

Ping rates can be configured in device settings. Additional options will be available soon.

Does using Locate My Asset affect battery life?

Occasional use on AG-31.2 has little impact. Frequent use, or enabling it on AG-31.1, reduces battery life.

How does the tracker detect productive idling?

By monitoring auxiliary input voltage, the device distinguishes between active equipment use and simple idling
