Introduction
Directory Sync 2.0 helps enterprise fleets automate the creation, updating, and deactivation of drivers and fleet users from their identity provider. These improvements give fleet admins more control over user roles, better visibility into sync activity, and new tools to resolve sync discrepancies.
What’s New?
- Custom role mapping: Map identity provider groups to Motive custom roles, including a secondary role and group combination for fleet users.
- Expanded attribute sync: Sync additional user details, including start date, mobile phone number, and driver’s license state and number, along with existing profile and role attributes.
- Directory Sync audit log: Filter audit log activity by Directory Sync and review user creation, profile updates, role changes, attribute changes, and deactivations. Where applicable, the log also displays the fields that changed and their previous and updated values.
- Sync health and failure reporting: View the last sync time, compare the total number of users in your identity provider and Motive, and export detected sync failure records for troubleshooting.
- Hard sync: Trigger a full reconciliation between your identity provider and Motive from the web dashboard when you identify a discrepancy. After the sync, fleet admins receive an email summary with users created, updated, and deactivated, along with any errors and user-level failure details.
How does this help our customers?
- Reduce manual work: Assign Motive custom roles and sync more user attributes from your identity provider.
- Troubleshoot issues faster: Use clearer sync health information, failure records, and Directory Sync activity in the audit log.
- Resolve sync differences: Use a hard sync to reconcile your identity provider and Motive without requiring engineering assistance for every request.
- Improve provisioning confidence: Review and trace Directory Sync activity more easily.

FAQs
What is Directory Sync?
Directory Sync allows Motive to create, update, and deactivate drivers and fleet users based on information from a supported identity provider.
Which additional attributes can be synced?
In addition to existing attributes, Directory Sync can sync the following information from your identity provider:
- Start date for drivers
- Mobile phone number for drivers and fleet users
- Secondary role and group information for fleet users
- Driver’s license state
- Driver’s license number
What is required for custom role mapping?
The role and group names must match in the identity provider and Motive. Role information must be mapped as an attribute in the identity provider. Up to two role and group combinations are supported for fleet users. Leading or trailing spaces received from the identity provider are ignored when matching names.
What does the Directory Sync option in the audit log show?
It shows actions performed by Directory Sync, including user creation, profile updates, role changes, attribute changes, and deactivations.
When should I use a hard sync?
Use a hard sync when the users or user information in your identity provider and Motive do not match. The hard sync performs a full reconciliation and provides a summary of the users created, updated, or deactivated, as well as any errors.
How do I get Directory Sync enabled?
Directory Sync must be enabled for your Motive account. To enable Directory Sync, contact your account representative or email ssosupport@gomotive.com.
