This guide walks you through installing your Environmental Sensor. testing it, and ensuring it is functioning properly. It covers installation and post-install verification steps.
Overview
The Environmental Sensor provides continuous visibility into temperature and humidity inside refrigerated trailers, enabling proactive action and audit-ready documentation. These sensors are compatible with all reefer makes and models—no additional Thermo King or Carrier accessories required. To get real-time visibility, you need a Motive Asset Gateway, a 4020 cable connected to the reefer, and Motive’s Bluetooth-based sensors. Each Asset Gateway supports up to 6 sensors for independent zone-level readings in single- or multi-zone reefers. The Environmental Sensor is monitoring-only and cannot remotely control temperature or humidity.
- Real-time monitoring: Track temperature and humidity continuously through the Fleet View.
- Historical temperature reports: Access detailed logs to investigate issues and support load claims.
- Proactive temperature alerts: Get notified when a reefer deviates from the desired range.
Note: The Asset Gateway for Environmental Sensor MUST be cable powered with the Motive cable 4020.

Installing Environmental Sensor
Before you begin installing an Environmental Sensor, make sure you have an Asset Gateway installed for Environmental Sensors and Environmental Sensor assigned to Asset Profile on the Motive Dashboard.
1. Use the alcohol wipes included in the box to wipe the area where you want to mount the Environmental Sensor.
2. Remove the adhesive backing from the mounting plate and attach it to the area once it has been thoroughly wiped.
3. If you are attaching the mounting plate to a metal surface, use the small mounting plate screws. In the case of wooden surfaces, use large mounting plate screws.
4. Attach the Environmental Sensor to the plate and secure it in place using the T6 device screws.
If you haven’t assigned your Environmental Sensor to your Asset Gateway either on the Motive Fleet Dashboard or Motive Fleet App, please do so by following these instructions.
5. Using the Reset Pin, press the pinhole reset button on the side of the Environmental Sensor to start the pairing process.
6. Once the LED starts blinking blue, it means the sensor is starting to connect to the Asset Gateway. Wait for 10 minutes for the pairing process to be successful.
Assigning an Environmental Sensor to an Asset Gateway using the Fleet App
- Sign in to the Motive Fleet App and tap Devices.
- Tap Install Environmental Sensor button.
- Use the search bar to enter the serial number of your desired Environmental Sensor.
- Select the Environmental Sensor of your choice.
- Click on the Continue button to proceed on with installing the Environmental Sensor.
- Select an asset of your choice.
- Select the Zone and Location for the installation of your Environmental Sensor.
- On the prompt asking for confirmation, tap Assign.
Note: Do not press and hold the pinhole button. Instead quickly press and release it to begin pairing with the Asset Gateway. The LED will start blinking blue if done correctly.
- Once the Environmental Sensor and Asset Gateway are paired, the temperature and humidity will appear on your Fleet Dashboard.
Note: If you want to confirm the connection, press (do not hold) and release the button again. If the LED flashes blue, then the Environmental Sensor and Asset Gateway have been successfully paired.
Assigning a Door & Environmental Sensor to an Asset Gateway Fleet Dashboard
Note: An Asset Gateway must have been assigned an Asset to assign an Environmental Sensor and Asset Gateway should be cable-powered for ideal performance.
- Log in to your Motive Dashboard and click on the Admin icon.
- Go to Organization> Assets and on the desired asset, go to three dots > Edit Asset.
- Scroll down to Sensors and click + Select source. Choose the correct Environmental Sensor Serial Number from the list.
- Select the zone and location of each sensor, which depends on whether you have a single reefer or a multi-reefer, and its actual installation location.
- Click the Save button once done.
- On the Edit Asset screen, click on the Save button.
Note: After assigning the Environmental Sensor to the Asset Gateway, a physical install is still necessary to complete the installation process, if not already done.
Verifying installation in the Fleet Dashboard
Once the environmental sensor has successfully paired to the Asset Gateway, the telematics data will begin to display on the Fleet Dashboard.
Note: If the LED is not solid blue and the telematics data isn’t showing on the Fleet Dashboard, please try again from step 5 to step 7 and ensure that your Environmental sensor has been assigned to the correct Asset Gateway.
