Face Match is Motive’s automated driver identification feature that uses facial recognition to automatically match drivers to vehicles as soon as they begin driving. This helps fleets reduce unassigned trips, and improve operational efficiency, safety, and compliance.
Overview
Face Match automates driver identification using Motive's dual-facing AI Dashcam Plus and facial recognition. This feature links trip data to the correct driver, reducing administrative work, and improving safety coaching.
- Save time: Minimise manual driver assignments, freeing fleet managers to focus on higher-priority tasks.
- Enhance safety: Ensure coaching events and Safety Scores are linked to the correct driver for fair feedback.
- Improve accountability: Strengthen incident investigations and vehicle use management with accurate driver identification.
Basics
Face Match uses images captured by the dual-facing DC64-WW AI Dashcam Plus to identify drivers automatically. The system is designed to capture four high-quality images per trip and match them to a driver profile.
How it works
- The dual-facing DC64-WW AI Dashcam Plus captures driver images at the start of a new trip when the vehicle exceeds 5 MPH.
- Images are securely processed to match an existing facial profile or create a new one. Motive does not store biometric data.
- If the image matches an existing profile, the trip can be automatically assigned to that driver. Face Match will identify drivers within the first three minutes of the trip.
- If the system detects a new, unrecognised face, it creates an unfamiliar profile.
- A fleet manager must manually review and assign the unfamiliar profile to a driver from the Admin > Drivers > Face Match tab.
- After this one-time association, future trips by that driver will be automatically assigned.
AI-identified vs. AI-assigned
When reviewing trips in the Motive Dashboard, you may see the following labels:
- AI-identified: The system suggests a driver but has not yet assigned the trip. A fleet user must review and assign it.
- A trip will remain AI-Identified while the trip is in progress. If you have enabled Automatic Assignment via the Fleet Settings, this will occur once the trip has been completed.
- AI-assigned: The system has confidently matched and automatically assigned the trip.
Enabling Face Match
Users with admin permissions can enable Face Match in the driver identification settings of the Motive Dashboard. Before enabling the feature, confirm that all vehicles meet the required eligibility criteria.
Eligibility requirements
- A dual-facing DC64-WW AI Dashcam Plus must be installed and assigned to the vehicle.
- Driver privacy mode must be turned off for the driver-facing camera.
- The vehicle cannot have a static pairing assignment.
To enable Face Match
- Log in to the Motive Dashboard and click the Admin icon.
- Go to Fleet View > Driver Identification > Edit, mark the checkbox next to Face Match (facial recognition).
- A notice will appear. Read and confirm that you will obtain all required consents from drivers or vehicle operators.
- Click Save to enable the feature.
Identifying and re-identifying a driver using Face Match
1. Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard, and click the Admin > Drivers > Face Match.
2. To identify a driver, go to the Unfamiliar Drivers tab and click Identify to review the latest images captured for the driver in more detail.
| Note: Make sure you enable Face Match from the Driver Identification Settings. |
3. Review the images carefully before identifying the driver and select any image to view in full screen. Click Identify driver to assign the unfamiliar profile to an existing driver account.
4. Select the driver name from the Driver name dropdown and click Identify to confirm.
A confirmation prompt appears on the screen. While identifying a profile, if the driver name selected already has an Identified profile, a model comparison of the profiles appears as a warning before completing the profile identification.
If the identified profile is incorrect, Cancel the identification process and re-identify the incorrectly assigned identified profile before assigning the Unfamiliar profile to the correct driver.
| Note: Avoid merging profiles of two (2) different drivers (whether Unfamiliar or Identified), as the images will be merged to profiles incorrectly, which can impact the accuracy of Face Match. |
Reassigning the incorrectly identified driver profile
If a driver is incorrectly identified, there are two (2) options available to reassign the profile:
- Login to the Motive Dashboard and click the Admin icon.
- Go to Drivers > Face Match > Identified Drivers and select the desired driver.
- Reset to the unfamiliar driver: Select Reset to the unfamiliar driver if the driver's identity is still unknown. Select a reason for reassigning the driver to Unfamiliar and then click Reset to complete the reassignment.
- Re-identify driver: Select Re-identify driver to reassign the profile to the correct driver. The identification modal appears to choose a new driver.
Note: If the newly selected driver already has an Identified profile, Cancel and locate the profile from the Identified tab in Face Match. Then, reset the profile back to Unfamiliar or reassign the profile to the correct driver account before assigning the previous Unfamiliar profile. Facematch applies to trips the moment its enabled, previous trips are not included. For incorrectly assigned drivers on previous trips manual reassignment is possible from the Trips report. |
Legal and privacy considerations
Facial recognition technology is subject to legal and privacy requirements. Before enabling Face Match, make sure your fleet is compliant with all applicable laws.
- Consent requirements: Your company is responsible for obtaining consent from drivers, contractors, or anyone who may be recorded. Motive provides a sample consent form to support this process.
- Data security and storage: Motive does not store or access biometric data. This design, combined with Motive’s security measures, significantly reduces the risk of biometric data exposure.
