WiFi Hotspot |
Answer
Motive has introduced updates to its Wi-Fi hotspot service, including true Wi-Fi measurement, reduced data allotment, blacklisting, and throttling instead of complete shutdowns.
In the context of our Wi-Fi hotspot service, Throttling is a change we've implemented to manage data usage more effectively. Instead of completely shutting off the Wi-Fi hotspot when users exceed their data limit, we now slow down their internet connection speed. This means that if a device reaches its data usage limit, it can still access the internet at a reduced and controlled speed.
Throttling allows devices to continue using the Wi-Fi hotspot at a reduced speed after exceeding their data limit. This ensures essential business operations can continue while preventing excessive data consumption.
To check if a device is being throttled, you can go to the vehicle profile, and if the status of the vehicle is labeled as Throttled, it means their data limit has been reached, and their Wi-Fi speed has been slowed down accordingly.
What is changing after the WiFi Hotspot update?
- Email Alerts: Fleet Admins will be notified that WiFi will be throttled once the allocated WiFi limit is exceeded for a cycle.
- Reduced Allotment: Lowering the allotment so that each device only gets 400 MB and any additional WiFi purchased.
- Blacklisting: Preventing users from using streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, and Audible.
- Throttling: Slowing WiFi usage once the device hits its threshold rather than shutting it off. Drivers will be able to use apps at a slower speed.
Update of WiFi Usage Summary Report
In the WiFi Usage Summary report, Fleet Admins and Fleet Managers will be able to see a new type of Status for the WiFi of each Vehicle:
- Enabled: Vehicle Gateway has access to WiFi
- Disabled: Drivers will be unable to access WiFi through the Vehicle Gateway because it is deactivated.
- Throttled: Once the allotted WiFi limit of a Vehicle Gateway has been exceeded, their internet will become slow.
How to Check the WiFi Status
- On the Vehicle profile, Fleet Admins and Fleet Managers can view Data Usage vs. Data Threshold.
- Information about the WiFi hotspot can also be viewed through Fleet> Vehicle Details >Other Details.
