Understanding and Improving your Safety Score

Your Safety Score is a rating between 50 and 100 that reflects how safely you've been driving over the past four weeks. A higher score means fewer unsafe driving events. Your fleet uses this score to identify coaching opportunities and track driving performance over time.

Overview

Your Safety Score is calculated based on your driving data and updated every Monday. It helps you and your fleet track progress and identify specific driving behaviors to work on. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your score reflects the last four weeks of driving, not just the current week. This means events from earlier weeks still count toward your score until they fall outside the four-week window.
  • Your score updates every Monday, so changes you make this week will be reflected in the following Monday's score.
  • Your score is based on your rate of safety events per 1,000 miles driven, not the raw number of events. This means driving more miles doesn't lower your score - what matters is how many events occur relative to your total distance.
  • You need at least 100 miles driven in the last four weeks for a score to appear. If you see N/A, it means you haven't reached that threshold yet in the current window.
  • Dismissed events don't affect your score. Dismissed events don't affect your score if dismissed within four weeks. Events dismissed after four weeks will already have been factored into prior scoring windows.
  • Your score starts at 50, not zero, to reflect that driving always carries some baseline level of risk and to encourage continuous improvement.

What affects your Safety Score

Your score is based on unsafe driving events detected during your trips. The more events generated per 1,000 miles, the more points are deducted. Behaviors that commonly affect the score include:

  • Mobile device use
  • Close following or tailgating
  • Stop sign violations
  • Speeding
  • Seat belt violations
  • Distraction
  • Hard braking
  • Hard cornering
  • Hard acceleration

Your fleet may have configured which behaviors are included in your score and how heavily each one is weighted. Contact your fleet or safety manager if you have questions about your fleet's specific settings.

How to improve your Safety Score

  • Stay off your phone while driving. Mobile device use is one of the highest-weighted behaviors in the default score.
  • Maintain a safe following distance. Close following is one of the most impactful behaviors on your score, leave enough space to react safely.
  • Come to a full stop at stop signs and follow all traffic signals and road signs.
  • Keep your speed within limits and adjust for road and weather conditions.
  • Drive smoothly. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turns, and rapid acceleration.
  • Wear your seat belt before every trip.
  • Review your safety events regularly in the Driver App to understand what's affecting your score and track your improvement week over week.

Why hasn't my score improved yet?

Because the score is based on a four-week rolling window, improvement takes time. Even if you've been driving more safely recently, events from earlier in the window are still being counted. As those events fall outside the four-week window, your score will begin to reflect your more recent driving. Consistent safe driving over several weeks is the fastest way to see a meaningful improvement.

FAQs

Why does my score show N/A?

Your score shows N/A when you have fewer than 100 miles of driving recorded in the last four weeks. Once you reach that threshold, your score will be calculated and displayed.

Why are events from weeks ago still affecting my score?

Your score is calculated on a four-week rolling window. Events don't reset monthly- they age out gradually each week as new driving data replaces older data. This is by design so the score reflects a consistent, recent picture of your driving rather than resetting to zero each month.

Can I dispute a safety event I think is incorrect?

Yes. If you believe a safety event was flagged incorrectly, contact your fleet or safety manager to review it. You can also review the event in the Driver App, add a comment, and mark it as reviewed. Your fleet or safety manager handles dismissal or reassignment from the Fleet Dashboard. Note that events dismissed within four weeks will no longer affect your score, but events dismissed after four weeks will already have been counted in prior scoring windows.

What score do I need to qualify for a driving bonus?

Motive calculates your Safety Score, but your company sets its own bonus thresholds. Check with your fleet or safety manager for your company's specific requirements.

Does every unsafe behavior affect my score equally?

No. Your fleet assigns different weights to different behaviors. Higher-weighted behaviors have more impact on your score. Mobile device use and close following tend to carry the highest weights by default.

Where can I view my Safety Score in the Driver App?

You can view your Safety Score and safety events in the Performance Hub in the Driver App. For step-by-step instructions, see What is Safety on the Driver App .
