Speeding

Detecting speeding events is critical to improving fleet safety. Motive detects speeding behaviors and provides real-time alerts, and offers tools to help fleets manage and respond to these events.

Overview

Motive’s speeding detection tools help fleets monitor speeding behaviors in real time. These tools offer detailed event data and coaching support to improve safety and compliance. Key features include:

  • Accurate detection: Detects both legal and policy-based speeding.
  • Customizable alerts: Set notifications and thresholds based on fleet needs.
  • Actionable insights: Access detailed event data and video for coaching.
  • Seamless management: Easy review and coaching for fleet managers.

Speeding detection

Motive detects two types of speeding behavior: speeding over posted limits and speeding over policy limits.

Speeding over posted limits

Occurs when a driver exceeds the posted speed limit by more than 6 mph for over 1 minute. This triggers a reviewable event and an in-cab alert. Motive uses a speed limit database for each road segment to ensure accurate monitoring.

Speeding over policy limits

Occurs when a driver exceeds a company-set speed limit (default 75 mph, customizable). This triggers an in-cab alert but does not generate a reviewable event. The detection is based on company-defined settings, not posted speed limits.

Supported devices: Vehicle Gateway, AI Dashcams (DC-53, DC-54), Smart Dashcams (DC-33, DC-34).

Both behaviors help identify and reduce speeding, whether it's against the law or the company's internal policy.

Viewing speeding events

Fleet users can review speeding events in the Fleet Dashboard:

  1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Safety > Speeding.
  2. Filter events by date, driver, vehicle, severity, behavior (speeding), or coaching status.
  3. Each event includes key details: driver, vehicle, date/time, location, and severity.
  4. Click on any event to view more details, including:
  • Recorded speed vs. posted limit
  • Map location
  • Duration and street information
  • Direction of travel

Video footage

  1.  In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Safety > Requests.
  2. Choose the Speeding Event you want to request a video for.
  1. A black banner on top of the map thumbnail displays Video is available for the event. Click Request Video.

Severity levels

Motive assigns severity based on how much the speed limit was exceeded:

  • Low: < 6 mph (< 9.6 km/h)
  • Medium: ≥ 6 and < 11 mph (≥ 9.6 and < 17.7 km/h)
  • High: ≥ 11 and < 15 mph (≥ 17.7 and < 24.1 km/h)
  • Critical: ≥ 15 mph (≥ 24.1 km/h)

Historical data

  • Use the Driver Safety Performance Report to review speeding trends.
  • The Location History Report shows a vehicle’s speed over time.

Adjusting speeding detection and alerts

Motive allows you to adjust speeding detection and alerts to match your fleet’s policies:

Setting thresholds for speeding over posted limits

  1. In the Fleet Dashboard, click Admin in the bottom left corner, then select Safety > Unsafe Behavior Detection.

  2. Choose from presets (for example, 6 mph over the limit for 1 minute) or set custom thresholds.

Configuring speeding over policy alerts

  • Set your fleet’s maximum speed threshold (default is 75 mph).
  • Alerts trigger in-cab warnings but do not generate events in the Fleet Dashboard.

Managing manager notifications

  1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to the Alerts section.
  2. Choose alert types, such as Speeding and Geofence Speeding Violation.

  3. Set triggers, thresholds, and recipients (drivers, groups, vehicles).
  4. Alerts can be sent via email, SMS, or the Notification Center.

Setting regular vs. trucking speed limits

  1. In the Fleet Dashboard, click Admin in the bottom left corner, then select Vehicles.
  2. Set speed limits for each vehicle under Edit Vehicle > Speed Settings.
Note: Speeding thresholds don’t directly impact the Safety Score, but frequent events may influence it.

Best practices

Motive helps you manage speeding events and coach drivers effectively. Follow these best practices:

Review and coach

  • In the Fleet Dashboard, go to  Safety > Speeding to find events.
  • Each event shows a coaching status (pending, coachable, coached, dismissed).
  • Review event details, then start a coaching session.

Coaching tools

  • Use the integrated AI Coach (for AI Dashcam users) or manager-led coaching.
  • Discuss the event, add notes, and mark the event as coached or dismissed.

Self-coaching for drivers

  • Automatically assign training videos to drivers for specific speeding events.
  • Enable or disable self-coaching for certain behaviors.

Address event inaccuracies

  • If the posted speed limit is incorrect, use the speed limit editor to set a custom limit. This will only affect future events for your fleet, not the global map.
  • Alternatively, dismiss the event if it’s inaccurate. Note that dismissals may impact the driver’s Safety Score and will be reflected on the following Monday.
