AI-Powered Safety: Forward Parking

Introduction

Forward Parking Detection helps identify when a driver parks nose-in (forward) and then reverses out of a parking spot. This maneuver increases the risk of backing collisions due to limited visibility and blind spots. The feature gives fleets consistent visibility into unsafe reverse-out behavior and supports coaching workflows to improve driver safety.

How Forward Parking detection helps you

Forward Parking Detection is designed to help fleets:

  • Reduce backing collisions: Reversing out of a parking space increases risk due to blind spots and cross-traffic.
  • Improve policy compliance: Many fleets require reverse parking; this feature surfaces non-compliance and helps managers coach drivers.
  • Lower insurance and liability exposure: Fewer backing incidents lead to fewer claims.

How Forward Parking detection works

The Dashcam and Vehicle Gateway work together to detect instances where a vehicle:

  1. Starts a new trip
  2. Moves in Reverse from a stationary position, and then
  3. Moves forward shortly after.

A short video clip is generated, capturing the above-mentioned events. Events are reviewed for accuracy by Motive’s Safety team before being surfaced on the dashboard.

Does my device support Forward Parking detection?

Forward Parking Detection is available for customers using:

  • All Vehicle Gateway and Dashcam (excluding AIDC+) customers

To ensure compatibility:

  • Confirm your hardware version in the Device Compatibility List in the Help Center.
  • Ensure both your Dashcam and Vehicle Gateway firmware are up to date.
  • Contact Support or your fleet administrator if you need help verifying device compatibility.
Note: Forward Parking Detection is OFF by default and must be enabled manually.

Enabling Forward Parking Detection

Settings for Forward Parking Detection are available in the Unsafe Behavior Detection and Event Intelligence page.

  1. Navigate to Admin from the main Fleet View dashboard. desktop-full.png

  3. Use the Behavior filter to select Forward Parking. desktop-full (10).png

You can view:

  • Severity
  • Video clips
  • Event details
  • Coaching assignments

How is severity calculated for Forward Parking?

Severity levels are based solely on how fast the vehicle is reversing:

  • Low: < 2 mph
  • Medium: 2–5 mph
  • High: > 5 mph

High-severity events are automatically set as coachable if auto coaching is enabled

How are drivers notified of Forward Parking events?

Drivers may be notified through:

Motive Driver App

  • Drivers receive notifications for high-severity, coachable events if auto-coaching is enabled.

Fleet Dashboard

  • Drivers and managers can view events and assigned coaching tasks.
Note: Forward Parking events do not trigger in-cab alerts since the event has already occurred.

Alerts & notifications for Forward Parking event

Email, SMS, and Push alerts can be created from the Alerts section of the Fleet Dashboard.

  1. From the Platform dropdown, click Alerts.

FAQS

Why did I receive a Forward Parking event even though my driver only reversed slightly?

Forward Parking Detection triggers whenever the system identifies a reverse movement followed by forward movement at the start of a trip, even if the reverse distance is short. The feature focuses on reverse-out behavior, not distance traveled.

Can Forward Parking events be excluded for specific locations (like depots or job sites)?

Not at this time. Geofence-based exclusions or location-specific rules are not supported. All qualifying events are detected regardless of location.

Why is a Forward Parking event missing video?

In rare cases, video may be unavailable due to:

  • Temporary dashcam connectivity issues
  • Low power or ignition problems
  • The vehicle gateway not uploading footage
  • SD card write errors If this occurs frequently, contact Support for a hardware check.

Do Forward Parking events still generate if the vehicle is manually pushed, towed, or rolling without ignition?

No. Forward Parking Detection requires a trip start, which begins only when the engine turns on. Movement without ignition will not trigger detection.

Does AI: Forward parking impact Safety score?

No, it doesn’t impact Safety score

Can I customize the detection threshold

No, you can’t customize the threshold
