Geofence Privacy & Event Suppression

Geofence Privacy & Event Suppression lets fleet admins create rules that automatically change camera behavior when a vehicle is inside a geofence, and return to normal behavior when it leaves. Because the rules run on the device, they don’t depend on cellular coverage.

Overview

  • Meet privacy and union requirements: Stop recording at sensitive sites such as corporate yards, bus yards and secure facilities, automatically and consistently.
  • Keep driver scores accurate: Remove the manual work of dismissing safety events that happen inside a geofence.
  • Reduce alert fatigue: Turn off event detection that doesn’t reflect real risk at a given site, such as stop sign detection at a landfill.
  • Protect privacy without a lens cover: Location-specific privacy happens automatically, so drivers don’t need to cover the lens.

How it works

Admins create rules in the Agents section of the Fleet Dashboard. Each rule combines three things:

  • Geofences: Selected individually or by geofence category.
  • Vehicles: Option to limit to specific vehicle groups.
  • Condition: The vehicle is inside the geofence. This is the only condition supported.

A rule can run two kinds of actions.

Stop audio and video capture

Choose the driver-facing camera only or both the driver-facing and road-facing cameras. Stopping capture on a camera also turns off event detection for that camera. For example, stopping capture on the driver-facing camera turns off driver-facing events.

When you select both cameras, the camera LED goes dark so the driver can see that capture has stopped. When you select only the driver-facing camera, the usual green driver privacy LED shows.

Note: If you select both cameras, collision detection is also off. The dashboard tells you this when you create the rule: “Safety events, including collisions, will not be detected.”

Turn event detection off

Cameras stay on, and the rule stops detecting the events you choose. In the Events field, all events are selected by default. To turn off only certain events, simply choose the specific desired event types. Collision detection cannot be turned off this way. Turning off an event also turns off its in-cab alert to the driver. You can combine this action with a camera rule. For example, you can stop capture on the driver-facing camera and turn off stop sign detection.

Behavior outside the geofence

You don’t need an exit rule. When the vehicle isn’t inside the geofence, cameras return to normal behavior based on your current dashboard settings and vehicle overrides. They don’t return to the state they were in before the vehicle entered, so any settings you changed while the vehicle was inside are applied when it leaves.

Connectivity

The device applies the rule itself, so rules keep working in areas with no cellular coverage.

Live view and video

While a rule is active, the vehicle’s live page, image refresh and livestream follow the rule. You can’t view or stream a camera that a geofence rule has stopped. This is the same experience you see when Driver Privacy is on or a camera is disabled through the API. See Driver Privacy and Configurations. You also can’t request video from a period when capture was stopped, because nothing was recorded.

Requirements

  • A vehicle with an AI Dashcam (DC-53 road-facing or DC-54 dual-facing) and a Vehicle Gateway 3 (VG3)
  • Minimum firmware: VG3 v112110 and AI Dashcam v61008
  • An admin role in the Fleet Dashboard to create rules

AI Dashcam Plus (AIDC+) support will follow in Q1 2027. Drivers don’t need to do anything, and no Driver App or Fleet App update is required.

Create a geofence rule

  1. Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and click Admin.
  2. Under Platform, click Agents.
  3. Click Create agent.
  4. In the Create agent window, select the Geofence category and choose a template: Stop audio and video capture within a geofence or Suppress events within a geofence.
  5. Under If this happens..., the trigger reads Vehicle is inside. Click select and choose the geofence categories or individual geofences.
  6. To limit the rule to certain vehicles, click Add vehicle trigger, choose group, and select the vehicle groups. The rule applies only while all triggers are met.
  7. Under Then, do this..., set up the action:
    1. Stop audio and video capture: In the Cameras dropdown, choose Road-facing and driver-facing camera capture or Driver-facing camera capture.
    2. Turn event detection off: In the Events field, leave all events selected, or choose specific events.
  8. To add a second action, click Add action.
  9. Click Review, enter a name and description, check the setup summary, then click Publish. To finish later, click Save as draft.
Note: A new rule can take up to an hour to reach the device.

Manage rules

Find your rules on the Agents page. Use Search by name, Status and Category to filter the list. Click the ... menu at the end of a row to View, Make a copy of, Deactivate or Delete a rule.

To change a rule, click View to open it, then click Edit. You can also Deactivate a rule from this page.

Changes apply to the affected vehicles. Changes to vehicle groups or geofence categories used by an active rule are also reflected.

Limitations

The following aren’t supported:

  • Omnicam and Provision cameras. These rules don’t affect them, so they continue to operate as normal.
  • AI Dashcam Plus (AIDC+). Support will follow in Q1 2027.
  • Rules that vary by vehicle state. A rule applies to all states while the vehicle is on. Engine-off recording follows your normal dashboard settings.
  • Disabling collision detection on its own.
  • Rule creation by non-admin users.
  • Driver App and Fleet App. The feature is Dashboard only.
Note: The Camera Control API isn’t blocked. If you also use the API, a call made while a vehicle is inside a geofence can override an active rule. See Dashcam Camera Control (full camera off).

Availability

Geofence Privacy & Event Suppression is currently available in the United States.

FAQs

Does this physically turn the camera off?

No. Audio and video capture and event detection stop, but the device stays powered and keeps reporting location and telematics. When you select both cameras, the camera LED goes dark so the driver can see that capture has stopped. When you select only the driver-facing camera, the usual green driver privacy LED shows.

What happens if the vehicle has no cell service inside the geofence?e

The rule still works. The device stores the geofence data and checks its own position, so no connection is needed to apply or lift the rule.

What happens if the device loses GPS inside a geofence?

In the rare event that a rule is stopping audio and video capture and the device can’t determine its location for an extended period while the vehicle is moving, the cameras revert to normal settings. This doesn’t apply to rules that only turn off event detection.

Which cameras and devices does this work with?

At launch it works with a Vehicle Gateway 3 (VG3) and an AI Dashcam (DC-53 or DC-54). AI Dashcam Plus (DC-63 and DC-64) support will follow in Q1 2027. Omnicam and Provision cameras aren’t supported, so rules won’t affect them.

Who can create these rules?

Admins only.

Are collisions still detected inside a geofence?

Yes, unless the rule stops audio and video capture on both cameras. In that case collision detection is off as well, and the dashboard flags this when you create the rule. Collision detection can’t be disabled on its own.

Can I request video from a period when the cameras were disabled?

No. No footage was recorded, so there’s nothing to request.

How long does it take for a rule to take effect?

It can take up to an hour for a new rule, or a change to an existing rule, to reach the device. After that, each time a vehicle enters a geofence, the rule typically takes effect within 30 seconds.
