Custom Safety Event Tags

Custom Safety Event Tags let fleet users create and apply their own tags to safety events, giving fleets a way to categorize incidents with business-specific context, such as at-fault vs. not-at-fault collisions, animal strikes, or curb strikes beyond what Motive's default event types capture. Tags are created in Admin Settings and appear across the Safety platform including the Events Listing Page, event detail pages, the Fleet App, and the Driver App.

Overview

Custom tags help fleets:

  • Categorize incidents with business-specific labels that go beyond default event types.
  • Filter and search events by tag on the Events Listing Page, and Reports > Safety Events
  • Segment data for reporting through Data Bridge, Reports Hub, and public APIs.
  • Give drivers context by making tags visible in the Driver App.

Before you start

  • Only users with the Manage organization settings permission can create, edit, or delete tags.
  • Only users with the Manage behavior tags permission can apply or remove tags from events.
  • Custom tags are a company-level capability. Tags created are available across your entire organization.
  • Tags cannot be applied to speeding events or video recall requests at this time.

Create a custom tag

  1. Log in to the Fleet Dashboard.
  2. Go to Admin > Safety > Unsafe Behavior Detection and Event Intelligence.
  3. Scroll to the Custom Tags section and click Edit
  4. Click Add Tag.
  5. Enter a tag name (up to 30 characters) and a description (up to 150 characters).
  6. Select a color for the tag from the color picker. Colors help with fast visual scanning across events, lists, and reports.
  7. Click Save.

Notes:

  • Duplicate tag names are not permitted.
  • Tags can be reordered by clicking and dragging to control the order they appear in filters and dropdowns.
  • Each tag is assigned a color from a preset palette. Colors appear on tags across events, the Events Listing Page, and Reports.
  • Tag descriptions are visible to users when hovering over a tag, helping teams understand when and how to apply each tag.
  • Editing a tag name or description retroactively updates all events where that tag has been applied.
  • Deleting a tag removes it from all events where it was applied. A warning will appear before deletion is confirmed.

Apply a tag to a safety event

  1. Go to Safety > Events.
  2. Open an event and go to the event detail page.
  3. Click + Tag on the event detail page
  4. Search or scroll to find the Custom Tags section
  5. Select one or more tags from the dropdown.
  6. The tag is applied immediately.

Tags can now also be applied during a live coaching session in our Performance product workflow.

View and filter by custom tags

Applied tags appear:

  • In the event row on the Events Listing Page, applied tags appear as +1, +2, etc. next to the event name. Users can hover to view the additional tags applied.
  • In the event preview/quick-view pop-up.
  • On the full event detail page under the Custom Tags section.
  • In the Driver App, drivers can see the context added to their events. iphone16pro-full-2 (4).png
  • In the Fleet App under the Behaviors filter and event detail view. iphone16pro-full-2 (5).png

To filter events by a custom tag, go to Safety > Events and use the Behavior filter. All active custom tags appear as filter options.

Reporting

Applied custom tags are available for reporting through:

  • Safety Event Detail PDF — tags appear as additional behaviors in the Event Detail PDF download
  • Data Bridge / Snowflake — for custom data warehouse integrations
  • Reports Hub — tags appear as additional behavior data in the Reports > Safety Events report
  • Public APIs — tag data is exposed for programmatic access
Note:  Custom tags are not currently visible in Motive Analytics but will be available soon in a future update.

FAQ's

Who can create or delete custom tags?

Users with the Manage organization settings permission under the Admin Safety section. Tags are available company-wide once created.

Who can apply or remove tags from events?

Users with the Manage behavior tags permission.

Do custom tags affect Safety Score or AI Coach?

No. Custom tags are secondary metadata only and do not impact Safety Score calculations or AI Coach workflows.

Will applying a custom tag change the event's primary behavior?

No. Custom tags are applied as secondary labels and do not change the primary event type or name. The only exceptions are Collision, Near Collision, and Positive Driving events, which maintain their existing hierarchy.

Can I apply tags to all event types?

Not yet. Speeding events and video recall requests do not currently support custom tags. Support for these is planned for a future update.

What happens to existing free-form notes when I use tags?

Notes remain unchanged. Custom tags are a separate feature and do not replace or affect existing event notes.

Is there a limit to how many tags I can create?

Each tag name must be unique, under 30 characters, with a description under 150 characters. Duplicate names are not allowed.

Where can I find a record of tag changes?

All tag creation, modification, and deletion activity is recorded under Admin > Audit Log.

Are custom tags available in all markets?

Yes. Because tag names and descriptions are user-entered, they are not translated. Customers can use their own language and terminology.
