First Responder

The First Responder feature from Motive helps fleets quickly connect with emergency services during severe collisions. By streamlining communication with local dispatchers, this tool can accelerate emergency response and improve safety outcomes for drivers.

Overview

Motive’s First Responder feature enables fleet managers to quickly connect with emergency medical services (EMS) after a critical incident. Key benefits include:

  • Faster emergency response: Reduces the time to connect with EMS during severe collisions.
  • Automated incident sharing: Sends key crash details directly to dispatchers.
  • Seamless workflow: Call local emergency dispatch centers near the accident location without waiting on admin lines.
  • Enhanced safety oversight: Enables real-time monitoring of critical events.

Basics

The First Responder feature allows Motive customers to quickly reach local emergency dispatch centers during severe collisions. It is designed to help reduce emergency response times in life-threatening situations.

  • Available exclusively for fleets in the United States.
  • Requires both a Motive Dashcam and Vehicle Gateway installed in the vehicle.
  • When Motive detects a scenario indicative of a life-threatening collision (e.g., severe vehicle damage, driver incapacitation, or rollover), the feature becomes available.
  • Fleet managers can immediately contact local EMS and share critical incident details.

Using the First Responder feature

Follow these steps to enable and use the First Responder feature during a severe collision:

  • Enable the feature: The First Responder feature is enabled by default for eligible fleets. To manage it in the Fleet Dashboard go to Admin then click Safety.

  • Receive collision alerts: Fleet managers and safety managers are notified about life-threatening collisions via email, push notifications, or SMS.
  • Access event details: From the alert, you can view collision details, watch the incident video, message the driver, or start a live stream.
  • Contact emergency dispatcher: Click contact emergency dispatcher in the alert or event view. You will receive a unique 10-digit phone number for the nearest EMS dispatcher (valid for 10 minutes).
  • Call EMS and share information: Use the number to call EMS. Accident details (driver info, vehicle data, time and location) are automatically shared with the dispatcher. Follow the provided example script to communicate efficiently with EMS.
  • Track call updates: All emergency call actions are logged in the Fleet Dashboard. You can generate a new emergency number within 6 hours of the incident if needed.

Important considerations

  • Motive cannot guarantee the detection of every life-threatening collision.
  • Motive will never call EMS on your behalf; this feature empowers the user to make the call.
  • Our Safety Review team uses the following scenarios to detect a life-threatening collision:
    • The vehicle is severely damaged and the Driver is incapacitated
    • Driver experienced severe health issues
    • The vehicle sustains severe damages regardless of the Driver’s condition
    • There are incidents involving human or severe animal collisions
    • There’s uncertainty about the Driver’s conditions after a severe collision, such as a rollover or high-impact crash
  • If you call EMS with the provided number, the following is automatically shared with the EMS: Driver name, vehicle make/model/year, license plate, VIN, time of impact, and GPS location.
  • You are responsible for informing your drivers about this data sharing and obtaining any necessary consents or authorizations per your company’s privacy policies.
