Connecting Motive MCP to ChatGPT

Motive MCP connects your live Motive fleet data directly to ChatGPT. Once connected, you can ask questions about your drivers, vehicles, HOS compliance, safety events, dispatch, and more in plain English and get answers grounded in your live Motive data, without opening the Motive dashboard.

Setup requires two roles. A ChatGPT admin must create the Motive app in ChatGPT first. Then each user signs in with their own Motive credentials to activate the connection.

Note: Only fleet admin accounts on the Motive side can authorize the connection at this time. Fleet managers and operators are not yet supported.

For ChatGPT Admin: Create the Motive App

A ChatGPT admin completes this step once for the workspace.

1. In ChatGPT, click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner, then select Settings.

2. In Settings, select Apps from the left sidebar, then click Create app.

3. In the New App dialog, fill in the following:

  • Name: Motive MCP (or any name you prefer)
  • Connection: Select Server URL, then enter https://mcp.us.gomotive.com/mcp
  • Authentication: OAuth (selected by default)
  • Check the box next to I understand and want to continue.

Note: ChatGPT displays a warning that the MCP server has not been reviewed by OpenAI. This is expected for all custom MCP apps and does not indicate a problem with the Motive connector.

4. Click Create. The Add Motive to ChatGPT screen appears. Click Sign in with Motive.

5. Sign in with your Motive credentials. Motive MCP is now added as an app in ChatGPT. Users in the workspace can connect their own Motive session.

For Users: Connect Your Motive Account

Once the ChatGPT admin has completed Step 1, each user connects their own Motive account.

1. In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Apps. Motive MCP appears in your list of available apps.

2. Click Motive MCP, then click Connect and sign in with your Motive credentials when prompted.

Test Your Connection

To confirm the connection is working, ask ChatGPT: "Give me a morning brief on my fleet performance from yesterday." ChatGPT will respond with a live summary of your fleet data.

Notes

  • Session persistence: Your session renews silently in the background every two hours. You will not need to re-authenticate unless you explicitly revoke access.
  • Revoking access: To disconnect Motive from ChatGPT, remove the app from Settings > Apps. This immediately ends the active session; the next attempt to use Motive data will prompt re-authentication.
  • Data visibility: At this time, connected users see fleet-wide data regardless of their role-based permissions inside Motive. Role- and region-based scoping is planned for a future update.
