Introduction
Smart Dashcam records the driving patterns and violations of the Driver. These recordings are used to detect any violations with the help of AI and safety risk tags are associated with every violation video recorded.
How safety risk tags help you
It helps Fleet Admins and Managers to:
- Stay updated with the violations of each Driver
- Plan proper training for Drivers to help them perform better
- Look at the driving and violation trends to make overall company performance better
Safety risk tags overview
Smart Dashcam keeps a track of the Driver’s activities on the road. It captures all the violations and experts with the help of AI assigns safety risk tags to these events. The Fleet Manager and Admin can view these events and stay updated with the driving events of each Driver.
Road Facing Tags
Close Following
When a Driver is observed as not maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front, the video is tagged as Close Following. Driving at a safe following distance is extremely important to prevent crashes on the road, specifically rear-ending incidents. Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle gives the Driver the ability to react to any change in the situation ahead, which prevents collisions.
Unsafe Lane Change
When the vehicle changes its lanes in an unsafe manner, the video is tagged as ‘Unsafe Lane Change’. A Driver should maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, and gradually change lanes while still maintaining a safe distance from any other vehicles in the new lane. So, if the Driver changes lanes without maintaining a safe distance, is too fast for conditions, swerves between lanes, or changes lanes erratically, we flag the behavior.
Lane Cutoff
When another vehicle cuts off the Driver by entering and occupying your safe following distance, the video is marked as ‘Lane Cutoff’. This tag highlights the positive recognition of the Driver’s action to quickly adapt to the changing situation on the road by applying brakes or changing lanes to avoid a potential collision.
Near Collision
When the vehicle comes very close to colliding with another vehicle, object, or animal on the road.
Collision
When the vehicle collides with another vehicle, object, or animal on the road, the event is tagged as Collision.
Camera Installation Issues
The model behind the Camera Installation Issue tag is catered to make sure you get the most accurate and detailed retelling of an event on the road. The CII tag is applied when a camera is improperly installed and hinders the proper recording of the road ahead or the inside of the vehicle. Whether it’s the front-facing camera or the Driver facing one, a correctly installed camera is the prerequisite for all other tags on a video.
Running a red light
FMCSA rules require Drivers to make a complete stop at a red light on the stop line until the traffic light turns green. Not stopping at a red light or stopping after the stop line causes a ‘Running a red light’ traffic violation. Smart Dashcam detects such events and marks the recording with the ‘Running a red light’ violation tag and can be accessed by the Fleet Manager and Admin.
Aggressive driving
Aggressive driving is a traffic violation that results in a near miss, collisions, and possible collisions. It also includes following a vehicle too closely, taking turns aggressively, waving in and out of traffic, overspeeding, and cutting other Drivers off. Any events with such driving are recorded and tagged as aggressive driving violation tags.
Passing in a no-passing zone
A no-passing zone legally prohibits Drivers from using the opposite lane of traffic to pass other vehicles. These zones are indicated by a solid (generally yellow) dividing line on the road. If a Driver is seen overtaking another vehicle or shifting to another lane of traffic, the event is marked as ‘Passing in a no passing zone’ traffic violation.
Failure to yield
Events where a Driver fails to slow down or come to a complete stop for another motorist or pedestrian when they have a legal obligation to do so, it is known as failure to yield. Even though it is a noncriminal traffic violation, such events are marked with ‘Failure to yield’ violation tag.
Illegal lane usage
When on the road, a Driver is bound to stay in his lane and not change lanes at the wrong times. If the Driver is using lanes in the wrong way, it is considered a traffic violation. A Driver found using lanes in a wrong way is recorded and marked with an ‘Illegal lane usage’ violation.
Stop Sign Violation
According to FMCSA rules, Drivers have to make a complete stop at a stop sign before crossing an intersection or to make a turn. In case a Driver fails to do so, a ran stop sign traffic violation occurs. In such instances, the video captured is marked with a ‘Running a stop sign’ violation tag.
Driver Facing Tags
In addition to the above tags, if you’re using Motive Dual Facing Camera (DC-34), you will be able to see the Driver Facing tags as well.
Distraction
When the Driver is not fully attentive to what’s happening on the road, the videos are marked with a ‘Distraction’ tag. There are different kinds of distractions including visual (not looking at the road), manual (not keeping hands on the steering wheel) or cognitive (take the mind off of driving) distraction. We mark the videos with a distraction tag when the Driver is using an electronic device, eating or drinking, smoking, driving with one hand on the steering wheel or looking in other directions for about 15 seconds.
Drowsiness
When the Driver seems to be sleeping behind the wheel, or his head is dropping to the sides in drowsiness, yawning, or blinking too frequently, the video is marked with the ‘Drowsiness’ tag.
Seat Belt Violation
When the Driver or person in the passenger seat is not wearing a seatbelt, the video is marked with the Seatbelt Violation tag.
Cell Phone Usage
The FMCSA provides clear guidelines on cell phone usage by commercial motor vehicle Drivers as well as incurable fines in case of any violations. The cell phone tag is applied whenever a Driver is seen using, holding, or interacting with a cell phone while driving. In many cases, this also causes the Driver to be distracted and thus the distraction tag will be generated automatically as well. Collisions caused due to distracted driving because of cell phone usage can result in potential loss of life on top of monetary losses.
Smoking Detection
Not only is smoking detrimental to health, but it can also result in distracted driving as well. Additionally, the FMCSA prohibits smoking within 25 feet of any vehicle carrying flammable materials or gasses. The smoking tag is applied to all scenarios where the Driver is holding, smoking, or lighting a cigarette or vape and serves to highlight the activity for the Fleet Manager.
