FAQs

How do I find a specific vehicle’s history?

Search for the vehicle on the Motive Dashboard, select it, and navigate to the History page.

Can I see all trips for a vehicle in one view?

Yes, the location timeline lists all trips and stops for the selected day.

What does the dotted line in vehicle history mean?

  • This feature provides transparency to inform fleet managers when location data is unavailable, instead of displaying incomplete routes as if they were fully tracked.
  • When breadcrumb data is missing in a vehicle's history, dotted lines on the map trail are displayed for the affected areas.
  • Fleet Managers can hover over these dotted lines to receive a notification that explains the data is unavailable for that portion of the trip. This differentiation makes it easier to distinguish between complete and incomplete data.

How can I remove access that allows users to see a driver’s location when the driver is not driving or not in a vehicle?

Motive does not currently offer a setting that only shows driver locations while they are actively driving and automatically hides them at all other times. Location in Fleet View is based on the vehicle’s hardware (Vehicle Gateway) and pairing between vehicles and drivers:

  • In history views, Motive already protects privacy by only showing driver location when the driver’s duty status is Driving or On Duty. Location history is not shown for Off Duty or Sleeper time.
  • In Fleet View > Live, driver tiles are tied to vehicles, so you can track a driver by selecting them from Fleet View. If no driver is currently connected, Fleet View still shows the last connected driver for that vehicle in the Status section.

There is no configurable permission for showing driver location only when driving and hiding it when not in a vehicle. If you need to reduce who can see driver locations at all, you have to do it via roles, permissions, and groups:

  • Use Roles and Permissions to restrict which fleet users can access Fleet View and driver/vehicle data, and to limit them to specific groups of drivers/vehicles so only designated managers see those locations.
  • Removing or narrowing Fleet View–related access for a role will prevent those users from viewing real-time driver/vehicle locations entirely, not just when drivers are off-duty.
