Introduction
Like the U.S. ELD Mandate, the ELD Mandate in Canada will require most commercial Drivers to install compliant Electronic Logging Devices. Regulations require Drivers of most commercial motor vehicles to keep a record of duty status (RODS) and must use the ELD product to show they follow the Hours of Service rules.

Canadian ELD Mandate FAQ
When did the Canadian ELD Mandate go into effect?
The Canadian ELD Mandate was introduced on June 12, 2021. However, Canadian Provincial Enforcement Authorities have agreed to postpone full enforcement of the ELD Mandate until January 1, 2023. Until that date, enforcement will increasingly focus on education and awareness.
Who needs to comply with the Canadian ELD Mandate?
If you operate Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) in Canada and are required to keep a Record of Duty Status (RODS), you must prepare for the Canadian Electronic Logging Device Mandate, with very few exceptions.
The Mandate requires that most fleets and commercial Drivers in Canada transition from using outdated paper logs to computerized logs to track the Driver’s hours. A third party will certify ELD devices to better ensure that the technical standards are met.
What are the exemptions to the Canadian ELD Mandate?
There are four main exemptions. Commercial motor vehicles will be exempted if:
- Operating under a permit from a provincial or territorial HOS director.
- Have a statutory exemption.
- Subject to a rental agreement of no longer than 30 days.
- The vehicle was manufactured before 2000.
How can I train my Drivers and office on the new Canadian ELD requirements?
It’s critical to start training your Drivers and back office before the enforcement deadline. You can access our blog post that outlines tips, tricks, and resources to help your fleet prepare for the Canadian Mandate. We highly encourage fleets to start training Drivers early in order to get ahead of the curve.
