Motive Labs

Motive Labs is a new dedicated space in the Motive Dashboard where fleet admins can explore new beta AI features and data experiences, built directly on their own fleet data, before those ideas become full product features.

Overview

Motive Labs is a new tab in the Motive Dashboard, available on the web only. It gives fleet admins hands-on access to experimental apps built on their own fleet data, without waiting for a full product launch. Apps in Labs come from three sources:

  • Private apps: Motive-built apps made available to selected customers.
  • Global apps: Motive-built apps a PM deploys for all customers who can access Motive Labs.
  • Custom-deployed apps: Apps customers build and add to their own Labs’ space. They are visible only to the customer who added them.

The Motive Labs apps are integrated directly into the Motive Dashboard, so admins aren't redirected to an outside site. Every app is labelled as experimental: it isn't covered by standard SLAs and may change or be removed at any time.

Note: Motive Labs is currently available on the Motive web Dashboard only; there's no Fleet App or Driver App support at this time.

Browse tab

This displays a grid of app cards. Each card shows the app name and a short description.

From this tab, admins can:

  • Open an app's details page: Selecting an app card opens its details page, which includes the following:
    • Open App and Add to My Apps buttons
    • App screenshots
    • A Key features section
    • A Change log with version updates
    • A Details panel showing the publish date, app version, and data requirements
  • Open App: Launches the app directly.
  • Add to My Apps: Saves the app to the My Apps tab for quick access later.
  • Request a new app: Use this form to request an app that doesn't exist yet. You can also route your request through your account executive.
  • Give feedback: A feedback prompt at the bottom of the page. Feedback is also available inside every app and goes directly to the app's builder.

My Apps tab

This tab lists the apps an admin is actively using:

  • Self-deployed (custom) apps: Apps the customer has built themselves outside of Motive, added through an "Open app" button. This opens a modal where the admin enters:
    • URL (required)
    • Name
    • Description
    • Icon (optional upload)
  • Custom apps are visible only to the customer who added them.

  • Managing custom apps: Admins can update a custom app's URL, name, description, or icon at any time or delete it entirely.
  • Opting out: Admins can opt out of any app, Motive-built or self-deployed, at any time. Opting out removes the app from My Apps and deletes the customer's data for that app.

Viewing and Using a Motive-built app

  1. Log in to the Motive Dashboard.
  2. Go to Labs.
  3. Select the Browse tab.
  4. Open the app you want from the grid of app cards.
  5. The app's details page opens, showing the app's screenshots, description, key features, change log, and details such as the publish date, version number, and data requirements, if any.
  6. Click Open App to launch and use the app.
  7. Click Add to My Apps to save it to your My Apps tab for quick access later.

Adding a custom app

  1. Log in to the Motive Dashboard.
  2. Go to Labs.
  3. Select the My Apps tab.
  4. Click + Custom App.

  5. In the pop-up, enter the app's URL (required), Name, and Description, and select an Icon.
  6. Click Deploy to add the app to your My Apps tab.

Note: Custom-deployed apps are hosted and managed by the customer. You are responsible for the app’s platform, keys, storage, and data handling. Motive Labs only provides a place to display the app link. It does not provide the app’s infrastructure or manage its data.

Data Protection

Motive-built Labs apps read fleet data through a managed connection scoped to the customer's identity and role. Apps never handle API keys directly. Data is session-only and clears when the session ends. Opting out of an app deletes that customer's data for the app.

FAQs

Who can access Motive Labs?

Fleet admins, across all segments and all countries where Motive operates. The Labs tab appears only for accounts with at least one Labs app enabled. Motive Labs does not yet support users with the company switcher. If you use the company switcher, you may see unexpected data in Labs. Support is targeted for the next couple of weeks.

Are Motive Labs apps supported like GA features?

No. Labs apps are experimental, built with no-code and low-code tools rather than developed with full engineering support. Each app is badged as experimental and may change or be removed.

How is customer data protected?

Motive-built apps read data through a managed connection scoped to the customer's identity and role, and the app never handles API keys. Data is session-only and clears when the session ends, and opting out deletes the customer's data for that app.

Who builds the apps?

Motive's own Product Managers build Motive-made apps, defining, describing, and building each one, with engineering providing the technical foundation. Customers don't build apps inside the Motive surface, but they can separately deploy their own apps into their own Labs space.

Can I request a new app?

Yes, reach out to your account executive or use the feedback button to let us know the requirement.

How do I give feedback on a Labs app?

Use the feedback option at the bottom of the Browse tab or the feedback option inside any individual app.

How do I stop using a Labs app?

For a Motive-built app, opting out removes the app from My Apps and deletes the customer’s data for that app. For a custom-deployed app, removing it from My Apps removes its link from the Labs space. The customer remains responsible for data stored or processed by the custom app.
