Roadside Inspections

This article explains how drivers can use the Motive Driver App to manage roadside inspections and remain compliant with US and Canadian regulations. Understanding inspection features and best practices helps ensure a smooth and secure experience.

Overview

The Motive Driver App simplifies the process of presenting hours-of-service (HOS) logs and transferring electronic logging device (ELD) data during roadside inspections. With built-in privacy features, the app ensures you only share the necessary information while remaining compliant with both FMCSA and CCMTA requirements. Key features include:

  • Inspection readiness: Access your HOS logs and compliance data quickly, ensuring you are prepared for roadside inspections without delays.
  • Driver privacy: The app only shares the required data with enforcement officers, ensuring your personal information remains protected.
  • Easy file transfer: Transfer your ELD output files to the officer with just a few taps, simplifying the data submission process and reducing the time spent during inspections.
  • Regulatory compliance: The app meets both U.S. (FMCSA) and Canadian (CCMTA) inspection standards, ensuring your logs are always up to date and compliant with both countries’ regulations.

Using DOT inspection mode

DOT inspection mode provides a secure, officer-friendly view of your HOS logs and ELD records. It hides personal data and only shows required compliance details.

Open the Motive Driver App menu and tap DOT Inspection Mode. Set an access code to keep your data private before giving your phone to the officer.

How do I transfer my ELD Output Files?

To transfer your Output Files, open the Motive Driver App and go to DOT Inspection Mode > Send Output File. Select a method and tap Send.

Do I need the internet to transfer ELD files?

Yes. If you don’t have a connection, let the officer know and follow their instructions.

What if the officer can’t receive my logs?

Show the transfer confirmation screen in the app and ask for the next steps. The officer may offer an alternative method.

Do I need to get a DOT roadside inspection every time I pick up or drop off a load?

No. DOT roadside inspections are not something drivers schedule or perform themselves for each load. They are conducted by enforcement officers at weigh stations, inspection sites, or during roadside stops. These DOT roadside inspections occur at any time, regardless of whether the driver is picking up, hauling, or dropping a load. They include a review of your driver credentials, HOS logs, and vehicle condition. The driver just need to always be ready for one if an officer stops them.

What drivers must do:

  • Be prepared to show compliant logs and documents whenever an officer requests them.
  • Use DOT Inspection Mode in the Motive Driver App during an inspection so the officer can safely review only the required HOS and compliance data and, if requested, send an electronic log output file.
  • Complete required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections (DVIRs) as part of your company’s and DOT requirements. Note that DVIRs are driver inspections, not the same as a DOT roadside inspection by an officer.
