HOS Clocks

Hours of service (HOS) clocks in the Motive Driver App help drivers monitor their duty status and available driving time in real time. These clocks support compliance and help drivers avoid violations.

Overview

The Motive Driver App displays real-time HOS clocks to help you manage your driving time and duty status. These clocks offer proactive insights, supporting efficient trip planning and helping ensure you stay compliant with regulations.

Key features include:

  • Real-time visibility: Instantly see your available driving and on-duty hours, ensuring you stay within safe and legal limits.
  • Proactive compliance: Track your limits in real time to avoid violations, helping you make timely adjustments before reaching your maximum hours.
  • Trip planning: Manage your time effectively for current and upcoming loads, allowing you to plan breaks and shifts with ease.
  • Cross-border flexibility: The app automatically adjusts between U.S. and Canadian HOS rules, ensuring compliance no matter where you're operating.

Basics

HOS clocks are the main way drivers track their available hours and follow hours of service regulations. These clocks help you manage your schedule, reduce fatigue, and stay compliant.

Types of HOS clocks:

  • Driving clock: Tracks remaining drive time (11 hours in the U.S., 13 in Canada)
  • Shift clock: Tracks your total on-duty window (14 hours in both the U.S. and Canada)
  • Cycle clock: Tracks accumulated on-duty time over several days (e.g., 60/70 hours in the U.S., 70/120 in Canada)
  • Break/rest clock: Tracks required breaks (e.g., 30-minute break in the U.S., 8/2 split or 10-hour rest in Canada)

Your duty status, such as driving, on duty, off duty, or sleeper berth, affects which clocks are active.

What are Alberta's HOS Regulations?

We recommend you review the Hours of Service regulations on Alberta’s official Carrier Education website to ensure you have the most accurate and updated information: Alberta Carrier Education - Module 3 and/or read Alberta Regulation 317/2002.

The Alberta Drivers' Hours of Service Regulation applies to carriers and drivers who operate the following vehicles only within Alberta:

  • Trucks, tractors, trailers, or a combination of these vehicles, have a registered gross weight or the actual weight of 11,794 kilograms or greater.
  • Commercial passenger vehicles (buses and vans) with a designed seating capacity of 11 or more passengers.

Drivers operating under the Alberta regulations must adhere to the following HOS rules:

  • “Work Shift” (on-duty period) begins after at least 8 hours of off-duty time
  • 13-Hour Driving Time in a Work-Shift Rule - After a driver has accumulated 13 hours of driving time from the end of the most recent period of 8+ consecutive hours of off-duty time, the driver must take at least 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time before driving again.
  • 15-Hour On-duty in a Work-Shift Rule - After a driver has accumulated 15 hours of on-duty time from the end of the most recent period of 8+ consecutive hours of off-duty time, the driver must take at least 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time before driving again
  • Work Shift Break Requirements: A driver may continuously drive a vehicle:
    • for up to 4 consecutive hours, if the driver takes at least 10 consecutive minutes off duty or non-driving time at the conclusion, or
    • for a period of time that exceeds the permitted time under clause (a), but does not exceed 6 consecutive hours, if at the conclusion of driving for that period of time the driver takes at least 30 consecutive minutes off duty or of non-driving time.
  • Off-Duty Time Reduction / Reduced Rest: Drivers have the option to reduce the 8 hours off-duty required to end a shift and start a new shift if they meet the following conditions:
    • Previous work shift did not exceed 15 hours
    • The number of hours that the driver is off-duty before the driver commences the next work shift may be reduced to not less than 4 hours
    • The total number of consecutive hours following the next work shift must be 8 hours plus the number of hours the driver reduced from the previous shift
    • A driver’s time off-duty using this provision may only be reduced once in any period of 7 consecutive days
    • For example, A driver reduces the 8-hour off-duty period to 4 hours. Prior to their next work shift, the driver must take at least 12 consecutive hours off-duty
    • See How to enable the Reduced Rest option in Driver App

Where do I find the HOS clocks in the Driver App?

You can find them on the home screen or in the Logs tab.

14-hour shift limit violation

  • The driver receives a 14-hour shift violation after being in the "On-Duty" and/or "Driving Status" for more than 14 hours in a given shift.
  • The driver didn't complete the split sleeper berth provision correctly.
  • Drivers can avoid this violation in the future by staying within the 14-hour shift limit and checking their clocks while staying connected to their vehicles.
  • Drivers can also set up notifications from the app settings to remind them if they are approaching a violation.
  • The driver can check split clocks for the correct time available.

30-minute break violation

  • Driving for a total of 8 hours without taking a minimum 30-minute break, exceeding the legally permitted limit under HOS regulations.
  • To avoid this violation, the driver must take a 30-minute break in a non-driving status (such as off-duty or on-duty but not driving) within the first 8 hours of the driving period.
