Basics

Pre-install checklist:

  • Confirm you have a compatible Vehicle Gateway and OBD-II (16-pin) cable
  • Locate the vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port (typically under the dashboard near the driver’s seat)
Park on a flat surface and turn off the engine
  • Have a zip tie or adhesive pad available to secure the VG

Installing the vehicle gateway with an OBD-II cable:

There are 2 ways to connect the cable to the vehicle’s diagnostic port:

Note: California state law prohibits relocating the in-vehicle diagnostic connector during installation. To remain compliant, always follow the Direct Plug-In installation instructions when installing this cable.
  1. Direct Connection (Cable 3015) is the quickest method to get started. Plug the cable directly into the diagnostic port.
  2. Plug the male end of the Motive cable directly into the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
  3. Secure the connection and use a cable tie to fasten the shorter cable, which has the spare diagnostic connector, to the main cable. Place the zip tie near the spare diagnostic connector for secure fastening.
  4. The other end of the Y splitter  is not used for this installation type Y-Cable Connection (Cable 3018) maintains access to the diagnostic port. Ideal for covert installations.
  5. Remove the OEM diagnostic port from its receptacle in the dashboard.
  6. Plug the male end of the Motive cable  into the removed diagnostic port.
  7. Install and secure the female end of the Motive Cable into the original receptacle where the diagnostic port was located in the vehicle.

Supported cable

For light-duty vehicles, Motive recommends the OBD-II (16-pin) cable:

  • Vehicle class: Pickup trucks, vans, and passenger vehicles.
  • Connector: Standard OBD-II port (usually found under the driver’s side dashboard).

Common OBD-II cable uses

The OBD-II cable is the most common option for light-duty vehicle installations. It allows quick setup without tools or advanced configuration.

  • Pickup trucks (for example, Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado)
  • Vans
  • Passenger cars
  • Light-duty trucks

FAQ

Do I need tools for installation?

No tools are required, but you can use a zip tie or adhesive pad to secure the VG.

Can I use the OBDII cable in heavy-duty trucks?

The LED lights on the VG will turn on, and you will see the right side LED blinking green, confirming GPS/ Cell connectivity.

What if my vehicle doesn’t have an OBDII port?

Most vehicles built after 1996 do. If yours does not, contact Motive Support for help with other cable options.

Is the installation reversible?

Yes. Simply unplug the VG and cable to remove it without damaging your vehicle.
