Introduction
This enhancement addresses common challenges with asset location tracking by improving location accuracy and reliability in scenarios where GPS signals are weak or unavailable. The location captured from the cellular tower is visible on the Fleet View for both vehicles and assets as the Approximate location via Cellular.
What’s New?
This new feature leverages cell tower triangulation as a backup method for asset location tracking, ensuring consistent tracking even in environments where traditional GPS signals face challenges, such as blocked views of the sky or indoor settings. The user is prompted with the message Approximate location via Cellular on the Asset > Profile and Asset > Live pages.
How does this help our customers?
- Outdoor reliability: When GPS signals are weak or unavailable (near large buildings or due to the device's installed position), cell tower triangulation provides a reliable fallback for location tracking. For example, heavy machinery like yellow iron can remain trackable even in environments with poor GPS visibility.
- Indoor use: For equipment occasionally stored indoors (U-Haul’s U-Boxes or heavy equipment stored overnight), cell tower triangulation creates a breadcrumb trail when LTE signals are available. For example, equipment moved indoors at stores like Home Depot can still be located without additional hardware.
