Managing Navigation Profiles in the Fleet Dashboard

A navigation profile defines the vehicle dimensions, weight, axle configuration, hazardous material classes, and route preferences that Motive’s Commercial Navigation uses to calculate routes in the Motive Driver App. Because every route is built from the profile, the driver is kept off roads that are restricted for the vehicle's height, weight, or load type.

Fleet Admins create navigation profiles in the Fleet Dashboard and assign them to vehicles or vehicle groups, so drivers select a ready-made configuration instead of entering vehicle details before every trip. A separate setting controls whether drivers can also create their own profiles in the Driver App.

Note: Commercial Navigation requires Motive Driver App version 106.0 or later and a navigation license assigned to the vehicle. To create or edit navigation profiles, your admin role must include the navigation profile permissions under Admin > Roles & Permissions.

Creating a Navigation Profile

  1. Log in to the Fleet Dashboard.
  2. Go to Admin > Driver App, then click the Navigation profiles tab.
  1. Click + Create Navigation Profile.
  2. Enter a Profile Name. Use a name drivers will recognize.
  3. Enter a Description to record any detail drivers or other admins need, such as the trailer type the profile applies to.
  4. Under Select Vehicle Preset, choose the preset that matches the vehicle. Presets are grouped into heavy-duty, medium-duty, and light-duty vehicle types and pre-fill the dimensions and weights for that vehicle class.
Note: Presets are based on federal standards. Confirm each value against the regulations and permits that apply to your routes before you assign the profile.
  1. Review the vehicle dimensions and adjust any value that does not match the vehicle: Max Height, Max Width, Max Length, and Max Weight. Height, width, and length are entered as separate feet and inches fields.
  1. Set Trailers Count and Axle Count using the stepper controls, and enter the weight limits per axle or axle group that apply to the vehicle.
  2. Under Avoidance Settings, select the road types the vehicle should avoid: Highways, Toll Roads, U-turns, Ferries, Tunnels, Unpaved Roads, Season Closure, and Controlled-Access Highways.
  1. Under Hazardous Materials, select the material classes the vehicle is permitted to transport, such as Explosive, Gas, Flammable, Combustible, Organic, Poison, Radioactive, Corrosive, Poisonous Inhalation, Harmful to Water, or Other.
  2. Click Save. The profile appears in the Navigation profiles list.

Assigning a profile to vehicles or groups

Assigning a profile to a vehicle means the driver does not have to pick one. When a driver selects that vehicle in the Driver App, the assigned profile is applied automatically.

  1. Go to Admin > Driver App > Navigation profiles.
  2. Locate the profile in the list and open its actions menu.
  3. Click Assign.
  1. Use the search field and the checkboxes to select the vehicles you want to assign the profile to.
  2. To assign the profile to a group, select the group instead. Any vehicle added to that group later inherits the profile.
  3. Click Assign to save. The Assigned To column shows the number of vehicles the profile applies to, for example, 5 Vehicles.
Note: A vehicle can have a directly assigned profile as well as profiles inherited from its groups, and the driver sees all of them in the Driver App. To remove an assignment, reopen Assign, clear the selection, and click Assign again.

Editing or deleting a profile

  • Edit a profile: Open the profile from the Navigation profiles list, change any field, and click Save. Drivers pick up the change the next time navigation calculates a route.
  • Delete a profile: Open the profile's actions menu, click Delete, and confirm. A vehicle assigned only to that profile no longer has one, so the driver is asked to select or create a profile before navigating.

Allowing or restricting driver-created profiles

By default, drivers can build their own navigation profile in the Driver App. Restrict this when you want drivers to use only the configurations set up by the back office.

  1. Go to Admin > Driver App and click the Settings tab.
  1. Locate Custom Profile Restrictions and choose whether drivers can create their own navigation profiles in the Driver App.
  2. Click Save Changes.
Note: When custom profiles are restricted, drivers can select only the profiles assigned to their vehicle. If no profile is assigned to that vehicle, the driver cannot start navigation until you assign one.

Viewing Navigation Profiles in the Driver App

Profiles assigned by the back office are read-only for drivers. When your fleet allows custom profiles, a driver can also create their own. A driver-created profile is saved to that driver's personal profiles, is visible only to that driver, and does not appear in the Fleet Dashboard.

  1. Open the Motive Driver App and select a vehicle. A vehicle must be selected before the map and navigation are available.
  2. Tap Navigation.
  3. Tap the vehicle profile shown at the bottom of the map.

  1. Profiles assigned by the back office will be automatically assigned to the selected vehicle. If there are multiple profiles assigned, then choose the one that is most relevant for the selected vehicle.
  1. In case no profile is assigned to the vehicle, a driver can create a personal profile to match the specifications of the vehicle by tapping Create profile under Personal section.

  1. Enter or adjust the vehicle dimensions, then set the trailer count, axle count, and the weight limits per axle or axle group.
  2. Tap the avoidance options to select the road types to avoid, and select the hazardous material classes being carried.
  3. Tap Create Profile. Navigation calculates routes using this profile.
Note: Changing profile values mid-trip, such as adding a second trailer, causes navigation to recalculate the route for the new configuration.

FAQs

Why can't a driver see any navigation profile?

Confirm the driver has selected a vehicle in the Driver App. Profiles are fetched for the selected vehicle, so nothing appears until a vehicle is selected.

Confirm a profile is assigned to that vehicle or to one of its groups and that the vehicle has a navigation license.

Can a driver change a profile that the back office assigned?

No. Assigned profiles are read-only in the Driver App. If a driver needs different settings, create an additional profile and assign it, or allow custom profiles under Custom Profile Restrictions.

What happens if a vehicle belongs to more than one group?

The driver sees every profile the vehicle inherits from its groups, along with any profile assigned directly to the vehicle, and selects the one that matches what they are driving.
