Secured credit on Motive Card is a credit-building card product designed for customers that may not qualify for a traditional unsecured line of credit. Credit limit is backed by a refundable security deposit, allowing customers to access Motive Card discounts, the Motive platform, and build business credit history.
- Access Motive Benefits: Use Motive Card for fuel and non‑fuel spend, access Motive’s discounts and platform, and get a working credit line backed by a refundable security deposit.
- Build Business Credit: Payment and credit activity is reported to Experian. Consistent on‑time payments can help establish and improve your business credit.
Modifying credit limit by adding/withdrawing the security deposit
For customers using secured credit on Motive Card, the credit limit is equal to the refundable security deposit. This can be increased at any time by adding more funds to the security deposit.
Customers can also partially or fully withdraw the deposit at any time, subject to clearing their outstanding balance. The new credit limit will be equal to your remaining deposit. For security reasons, withdrawals are only permitted to business bank accounts that have been linked to the customer for a minimum of 30 days.
Graduating to an unsecured credit line
Motive will automatically re-evaluate your account every 3 months after an initial 9-month period of consistent on-time payments. If you qualify, we will transition you to a partial or fully unsecured credit line.
Invoice payments
The security deposit acts as collateral, customers are still required to pay their weekly invoices via their linked bank account. However, if the account is closed, the deposit can be used to offset any pending invoices.
Application process
No separate application is required. If your Motive Card application does not qualify for a traditional unsecured credit line, it is considered for a secured credit line instead.
Onboarding for secured credit
- Once your credit has been approved, log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and go to Cards > Overview
- Connect to your bank account using plaid for invoice payments.
- Add a security deposit to the routing number provided. The amount deposited becomes the credit limit. Some customers may also be given the ability to pull funds from their Plaid linked bank account
- Wait for your cards to arrive. Once you receive the cards, activate them and start using them.
Increasing credit limit
- Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Cards > Billing > Account overview > Manage.
- Click Add funds.
- Make a payment to Motive using the routing number or wire from your business account. Deposits may take up to 3 to 5 business days to post. Some customers may also be given the ability to pull funds from their Plaid linked bank account.
Withdrawing funds
Secured Card users can partially or fully withdraw their deposit at any time, subject to clearing their outstanding balance. Your new credit limit will be equal to your remaining deposit. For security reasons, withdrawals are only permitted to business bank accounts that have been linked to the customer for a minimum of 30 days.
- Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Cards > Billing > Account overview > Manage.
- Click Withdraw funds.
- The total amount available for withdrawal is displayed in the pop-up. The amount available for withdrawal is calculated by subtracting your current outstanding balance from the security deposit.
- Enter the desired amount to withdraw from the available amount to withdraw and click Request a withdrawal.
- Motive’s team will review the withdrawal request, and once verified you will receive a confirmation email.

No. The security deposit does not earn interest. The value of secured credit is in gaining access to Motive’s fuel and non‑fuel discounts, software, and the ability to build your business credit profile through Experian reporting
I already have an unsecured credit from Motive. Can I increase my credit limit if I provide a security deposit?
Yes, you can increase your credit limit by providing a security deposit. Your credit line will increase by the amount of security deposit that you provide. You can email cardsupport@gomotive.com to enable this functionality for your account.
