The Legal Subdivision (LSD) system is a land grid used across Western Canada to identify remote well sites, lease roads, and facilities in the oil and gas industry. With LSD Search in Fleet View, you can look up an LSD coordinate directly on the live map and see exactly where a crew or vehicle needs to go without leaving the Fleet Dashboard.
Overview
LSD Search is built into the Location search bar on the live map in Fleet View. When you enter a valid LSD coordinate, the map recognizes it as an LSD (rather than a driver, vehicle, or address), drops a pin at the center of that LSD, and displays a details card with LSD reference and latitude/longitude. Key features include:
- Accurate pin placement: The map drops a pin at the geographic center of the LSD parcel and displays its latitude/longitude for quick reference.
- Actionable from the result card: List nearby entities, view location history, or create a geofence directly from the LSD search result.
| Note: Currently, Motive supports LSD coordinates search for Alberta province only. Additional provinces will be added in later releases. |
Searching by LSD Coordinate
- Log in to the Fleet Dashboard. Click Fleet View in the left-side navigation.
- Click the search bar at the top of the live map.
- Type or paste your LSD coordinate into the search bar using the format: LSD-Section-Township-Range-Meridian. For example, NW-14-05-20-11W4. To narrow the search to a specific quarter section, add the quarter prefix (NW) before the LSD number.
| Note: The search bar accepts leading zeros in most positions. For example, 14-05-020-11-W4 is valid. However, if the format is not recognized as a valid LSD, the search falls back to a standard address search, which may return no results. If you see unexpected results, check the format of your LSD coordinate and try again. |
- Select the LSD result from the dropdown. The result displays the LSD name.
The map zooms in and drops a pin at the center of the LSD. Click the pin to open the context card, which shows the LSD name, geographic coordinates, and the following options: List nearby entities, View history, and Create a geofence here.
| Note: The pin is placed at the geographic center of the LSD parcel. For dispatch or navigation, use the pin as a reference point and confirm lease roads and access points with your operator or site lead. |
Valid LSD Coordinate Format
A Legal Subdivision (LSD) coordinate pinpoints a specific parcel of land within the Dominion Land Survey grid used across the Prairie provinces. Fleet View Location Search accepts the common Alberta LSD and quarter-section formats. For example, NW-14-05-20-11W4 breaks down as follows:
| Part | Meaning |
| NW | Quarter designation (NW, NE, SW, or SE) |
| 14 | Legal subdivision (1–16; the 40-acre parcel within the quarter section) |
| 05 | Section (1–36 within a township) |
| 20 | Township number (counting north from the US border) |
| 11 | Range number (counting west from a principal meridian) |
| W4 | Meridian reference (W4 = west of the 4th meridian, covering most of Alberta) |
FAQs
Which provinces are supported today?
Currently, only Alberta is supported. Support for additional provinces is planned for future releases.
Does the pin represent the exact well-site location?
The pin is placed at the center of the LSD parcel, which is approximately a 40-acre area. The actual well head, battery, or access road may be offset from the pin. Always confirm the exact location with your site lead before dispatching.
Can I save or bookmark frequently searched LSDs?
Saving or bookmarking LSD locations is not currently supported. As a workaround, you can use Create a geofence here from the result card to save the location and access it later.
Why did my LSD search return no results?
There are several common reasons:
- Invalid format: The input does not match the expected LSD pattern (for example, missing dashes, meridian suffix, or out-of-range values).
- Outside Alberta: The LSD belongs to a province that is not currently supported.
- Typo in the coordinate: The format is valid, but the specific combination of quarter, LSD, section, township, range, and meridian does not exist.
Can drivers use LSD search in the Driver App?
No, LSD search is currently available only in the Fleet Dashboard.
