Commercial Navigation gives you turn-by-turn directions inside the Motive Driver App, using routes calculated for your vehicle's height, weight, length, and load type. You can navigate to an address you enter yourself or to your next dispatch stop, and your Hours of Service (HOS) clocks stay in view while you drive.
Because navigation runs inside the Driver App, you do not switch to another app to follow a route, so your duty status, dispatch, and inspection workflows stay available.
Note: Navigation is available on Motive Driver App version 106.0 or later on a vehicle that has a navigation license. If navigation does not appear after you select a vehicle, that vehicle is not licensed for it. Contact your fleet manager.
Before you begin
- Open the Motive Driver App and log in.
- Select your vehicle. You must select a vehicle before the map and navigation are available, because your navigation profile is tied to the vehicle.
- Check the navigation profile shown at the bottom of the map. It should match the vehicle and trailer combination you are driving. If your fleet has assigned more than one profile, tap the profile to switch to the correct one.
For more details, refer to viewing navigation profiles.
Note: You do not need to be connected to the Vehicle Gateway to load your navigation profile. Selecting the vehicle is enough.
Where to start navigation
You can start Commercial Navigation from any of these places in the Driver App:
- Main menu: Tap the menu icon on the top left, then tap Navigation.
- Dispatch: Open an assigned dispatch and tap Navigate on a stop. The stop address loads straight into navigation.
- Driving Lock Screen: While the Driving Lock Screen is active, switch to navigation without losing the route you are on.
Navigating to a destination
- Tap Navigation.
- Tap the search bar, enter the destination address or place name, and tap the correct result.
- Review the route options. Navigation shows more than one route with the travel time and any tolls and recommends one based on your profile and avoidance settings.
- Tap the route you want to drive.
- Tap Start to begin turn-by-turn guidance. The screen shows lane guidance, the posted speed limit, your remaining HOS drive time, and the time and distance left to the destination.
Navigating to a dispatch stop
If your back office sends you dispatches, you do not need to type the address. Navigation takes the stop address directly from the dispatch.
- On the Driver App home screen, open your assigned dispatch.
- Find the stop you are heading to.
- Tap Navigate on that stop. The stop address loads into Commercial Navigation.
- Review the suggested route and tap Start.
- Complete your dispatch workflows as usual while you drive. If the back office adds, removes, or changes a stop, the dispatch updates, and you can tap Navigate on the new stop.
Note: Navigation guides you to one stop at a time. After you arrive, return to the dispatch and tap Navigate on the next stop.
While you are navigating
- HOS stays visible: Your remaining drive time shows on the navigation screen, so you can plan a stop before you run out of hours.
- Driving Lock Screen: Switch between the Driving Lock Screen and navigation without losing your route.
- Dark mode: Navigation supports dark mode for night driving. On iOS, dark mode applies to the turn-by-turn screen; on Android, it applies to the whole navigation flow.
- Map controls: Adjust the zoom level during turn-by-turn guidance, and change map layers to switch views or show traffic.
- Exit and return: You can leave turn-by-turn navigation and come back without entering the destination again.
FAQs
Why don't I see Navigation in the Driver App?
Select a vehicle first. Navigation stays hidden until a vehicle is selected.
If it is still hidden after you select a vehicle, that vehicle does not have a navigation license. Your fleet manager assigns licenses to vehicles.
Why is my route different from the one a car navigation app shows?
Commercial Navigation routes for your vehicle, not for a car. Low bridges, weight-restricted roads, and roads restricted for your hazardous material class are avoided, so the route can be longer than a consumer app's route.
Can I change my vehicle profile mid-trip?
Yes. Tap the profile at the bottom of the map and select or update it, for example, after picking up a second trailer. Navigation recalculates the route for the new configuration.
What happens if I lose signal?
Guidance continues on the route already calculated. Rerouting, traffic updates, and new destination searches need a data connection.
