Introduction
Asset Gateway helps in GPS tracking for the trailers, other vehicles, and assets. It helps fleets understand the location of their assets, prevent unauthorized use, maximize utilization, and simplify dispatching to save time and money across fleet operations.
This article will help you install Asset Gateway with cable-4020 to the trailers easily.

Steps: Installing Asset Gateway with cable-4020
Adjusting 7-way trailer connector
1. Locate J560 7-way trailer connector on the front of the trailer.
2. Disconnect the 7-way plug from the trailer socket.
3. Start the truck and use a multimeter (set to DC) on the vehicle-side 7-way plug to determine which pins have constant 12V power.
4. Identify the Power (usually a blue wire on the center pin) and Ground (usually a white wire on the top pin).
The most common and alternate configurations are shown below.
5. Remove the 2 bolts of the 7-way connector using a socket or crescent wrench.
6. Pull the 7-way assembly out of the trailer housing.
7. Remove any existing covers/heat shrink/tubing/wrap from the back of the 7-way connector, so that you can access the connected wires.
8. Identify the power and ground terminals on the back of the 7-way connector based on the corresponding plug pins and wire colors identified in Step 4.
9. Determine if bare wire, ‘flat’ terminals, or ring terminals are required. Crimp the correct terminals to the bare wires at the end of Cable-4020 if they are necessary.
Cable wire insertion
1. Insert the cable wires through the black splice cover and slide it up the cable to cover the splice after the installation.
| Note: The cable fuse does not go through the splice cover. The splice cover is only relevant for 7-way connectors that look like the one in Step 4. |
2. Loosen the ground terminal screw of the 7-way connector using a screwdriver but do not remove the existing wire.
3. Connect the white wire (labeled ‘Ground’) of cable-4020 to the ground terminal of the 7-way connector.
4. Remove any existing covers/heat shrink/tubing/wrap from the back of the 7-way connector, so that you can access the connected wires.
5. Tighten the ground terminal screw, mating together the existing trailer wire and the white wire of cable-4020.
6. Loosen the power terminal screw of the 7-way connector but do not remove the existing wire.
7. Connect the blue wire (labeled ‘Power’) of cable-4020 to the power terminal of the 7-way connector.
8. Tighten the power terminal screw, mating together the existing trailer wire and the blue wire of cable-4020.
9. Slide the back splice cover over the back of the 7-way connector.
10. Put the 7-way assembly back in its housing and use the 2 bolts to refasten the 7-way to the trailer.
11. Insert the 7-way plug coming from the vehicle back into the 7-way socket of the trailer.
Asset gateway and cable connection
1. Identify the target location to mount the Asset Gateway and verify the cable has sufficient length for the target location.
Note: See the Installation Guide for Asset Gateway for guidance on mounting location.
2. Mount the trailer tracker in the target location.
3. Remove the Asset Gateway connector cover.
4. Use the cable holders to route and secure the cable from the 7-way connector to the Asset Gateway. It is important to route the cable to provide strain relief to the Asset Gateway connector and ensure the cable is secure during travel.
If the mounting plate is used, ensure the cable routes up through 2 cable clips before descending down to the 7-way.
5. Attach cable-4020 to Asset Gateway.
6. Remove the sticker covering the solar panel on the device.
7. Start the vehicle to provide the power to the trailer and Asset Gateway. A green light should appear on Asset Gateway when it receives power.
Additional Notes
Below are three incorrect installations:
1. Solar-powered unit installed without a solar mount.
2. Solar peel sticker was not removed.
3. The unit was installed on a curved surface and not a flat surface.
