Live Streaming and Live Check-in let fleet managers get real-time visibility into a vehicle, from quick snapshot check-ins across every connected camera to a full live video stream from any one of them. This now includes AI Omnicam, in addition to AI Dashcam and AI Dashcam Plus.
Overview
Motive's Live Streaming and Live Check-in features provide instant visibility into vehicles using AI Dashcam, AI Dashcam Plus, and, new with this release, AI Omnicam.
Key capabilities include:
- Real-time visibility. View snapshots or live video from any connected camera instantly.
- Full camera coverage. Check in on road-facing, driver-facing, and all connected Omnicam views in one place.
- Faster incident response. Check on events or emergencies as they happen.
- Improved safety oversight. Monitor risky behavior and take immediate action.
- Controlled access. Permissions ensure only authorized users can initiate streams.
Devices this applies to
- AI Dashcam: AIDC-53 (road-facing), AIDC-54 (dual-facing)
- AI Dashcam Plus: DC-63 (road-facing), DC-64 (dual-facing)
- AI Omnicam: OC-1
Live Check-in
Open the Live tab on a vehicle's page and click the full-screen expand button on the camera image. This is the same entry point as today. It opens the Live Check-in view, which shows:
- A horizontal filmstrip of time-synced thumbnails from every connected camera: the AI Dashcam or AI Dashcam Plus road-facing and driver-facing views first, followed by all connected AI Omnicams in alphabetical order.
- One camera is shown large in the "spotlight," with the road-facing view selected by default. Click any other tile to bring that camera into the spotlight.
- Each tile refreshes automatically about every 1 to 2 minutes, with a timestamp showing how current the image is. If a refresh fails, the tile keeps showing the last successful image until the next retry. It never goes blank.
- A Refresh All button to manually refresh every tile at once.
- Status badges showing which cameras are offline or failed to refresh.
- A session that ends automatically after 5 minutes. Simply start a new session to continue.
How Live Streaming works
Live streaming provides temporary, real-time access to camera footage.
- Streams are not recorded or stored automatically. Only safety events and recalled videos are saved in the system.
- Starting an AI Dashcam or AI Dashcam Plus stream triggers in-cab audio and visual driver alerts, which cannot be disabled. Starting an Omnicam stream does not trigger this alert, since Omnicams aren't installed in the cab. If you switch from an Omnicam stream to an AI Dashcam or AI Dashcam Plus view mid-session, that driver alert still applies.
- Streaming quality depends on cellular connectivity.
- Only one camera can stream per vehicle at a time. Clicking a different camera tile during an active stream ends that stream and immediately starts a new one for the newly selected camera.
- Each stream runs up to 10 minutes. You'll be prompted to continue if minutes remain, or notified if you're out of streaming minutes.
Prerequisites for Live Streaming
To start a live stream:
- The vehicle must have an AI Dashcam, AI Dashcam Plus, or AI Omnicam installed.
- The vehicle must be powered on.
- The vehicle must be in range of a working cellular signal. Streaming video quality depends on the cell signal.
- Live streaming must be enabled for the vehicle.
- The Vehicle Gateway must not have exceeded the monthly data limit.
- The Vehicle Gateway must be running firmware v29 or later.
- The user must have live streaming permissions.
Enable Live Streaming for vehicles
Live streaming must be enabled before it can be used.
- Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and click Admin.
- Go to Safety.
- In Dashcam settings, click Edit.
- Enable Live Stream.
- Confirm and click Save.
Manage Live Streaming permissions
Live streaming access requires the Live Stream permission, which is not included in existing admin roles by default, for privacy reasons. To grant access, create or assign a role with this permission from Admin > Fleet Users > Roles & Permissions.
Only users with this permission can start a live stream.
Start a Live Stream (Fleet Dashboard)
- Log in to the Fleet Dashboard.
- Go to Fleet View > Vehicles.
- Select a vehicle with an AI Dashcam, AI Dashcam Plus, or AI Omnicam.
- Open the Live tab.
- Click the full-screen expand button to open Live Check-in, then click Start Live Stream. You can do this directly from the vehicle page's camera image, which starts the road-facing camera immediately, or from within Live Check-in for whichever camera is in the spotlight.
Once connected:
- View the road-facing camera by default.
- Switch to any other connected camera, including Omnicams, by selecting its tile.
| Note: The driver is notified when an AI Dashcam or AI Dashcam Plus live stream starts and ends. This notification does not occur for Omnicam streams. |
Start a Live Stream (Fleet App)
- Open the Fleet App.
- Go to Fleet View.
- Select a vehicle.
- Open the Cameras section.
- Tap Start live stream to initiate live streaming.
- Switch between camera views as needed.
- To exit the live stream, tap the X icon.
Omnicam live streaming is not available on the Fleet App in this release. Fleet App streaming continues to support AI Dashcam and AI Dashcam Plus only, with Omnicam support planned as a later release.
Usage limits and additional footage
- Each Dashcam includes 10 minutes of live streaming per month (Pro and Enterprise plans).
- Each connected AI Omnicam includes an additional 10 free minutes per month, shared across all cameras on that vehicle. These minutes are not shared with the AI Dashcam's minutes and don't pool fleet-wide.
- Minutes are device-specific and do not roll over.
- Browsing Live Check-in snapshots doesn't use any streaming minutes. Minutes are only consumed once you start an actual live stream.
Purchase additional live streaming
- Add a live streaming license for $5/month.
- Includes 10 additional hours per month (600 minutes).
- Hours can be pooled across all AI Dashcams and AI Omnicams.
- The license fee is a flat rate, charged regardless of actual usage. Unused hours do not roll over.
To upgrade, contact your Motive representative or Support.
Privacy
- If driver-facing privacy mode is on, that camera's tile stays blacked out with the usual message.
- Omnicam tiles are unaffected by driver privacy mode, since Omnicams aren't installed in the cab.
- Face-blurring does not work for live streaming.
Availability
- US: Generally Available.
- Canada & Mexico: Live Check-in is Generally Available. Omnicam Live Streaming specifically is available to every account as an expanded Beta.
- UK/EU: Not available. AI Omnicam is not sold in this region.
Best practices
- Use live streaming for active incidents or urgent checks.
- Avoid continuous monitoring to protect driver privacy.
- Ensure strong connectivity before starting a session.
- Limit usage to conserve available streaming time.
FAQ
Who can start a live stream?
Only users with live streaming permissions can initiate a stream.
Are drivers notified during live streaming?
Drivers receive in-cab audio and visual alerts for AI Dashcam and AI Dashcam Plus streams, and this cannot be turned off. Omnicam streams do not trigger this driver notification.
Is live streaming footage saved automatically?
No. Live streams are not stored. Only safety events and recalled videos are saved.
Why can't I start a live stream?
Check that the vehicle is on, connectivity is available, live streaming is enabled, you have the correct permissions, and the vehicle has live stream minutes available.
How much live streaming is included?
Each AI Dashcam includes 10 minutes per month. Each connected Omnicam includes an additional 10 minutes per month, shared across cameras on that vehicle. Optional paid upgrades are available for additional usage.
Why does my dashcam show No live feed when I try to watch live video?
No live feed means Motive can’t start a live stream from the camera right now. This is almost always due to one of these conditions:
- Camera is offline or disconnected. If the dashcam, Omnicam, or Vehicle Gateway is powered off, has no LTE, or is otherwise disconnected, live streaming isn't possible. In the Fleet Dashboard, check the camera and vehicle status (Disconnected / No Signal / No LTE). If it is offline, follow the standard dashcam connectivity troubleshooting steps.
- Live Streaming is not enabled for that vehicle or account. Check your Safety settings, and confirm it isn't limited to certain plans or devices. Admins can enable it from the Fleet Dashboard using the live-streaming safety settings or the bulk enable tool.
- Privacy or camera control is blocking live video. Driver Privacy Mode or Camera Control can prevent live video even if the camera is powered. Features like Driver Privacy Mode or Camera Control (full camera off or off while idling) can prevent live video from being available, even if the camera is powered.
- If privacy is configured to block driver-facing or all cameras in certain conditions, you may see No live feed when those conditions are active.
If the camera is online, Live Streaming is enabled, and privacy settings allow it, but you still see No live feed, Contact Motive Support with your company name, vehicle ID, device status, and the approximate time of the attempt.
Support will check the backend streaming status and any live-stream minute or configuration limits on the account.
Can I hear audio during a real-time live stream?
Enabling In-Cab Audio Recording allows audio to be recorded and played back for critical events and video recalls, but live-stream audio is not currently supported.
Where can I see how much live streaming time is left?
There is currently no in-dashboard view showing remaining live streaming minutes. The system alerts you only when the limit is reached. Contact Motive Support to review your account's live-stream allocation.
Can I stream more than one camera at once?
No. Only one camera can live stream per vehicle at a time. Selecting a different camera tile during an active stream ends the current stream and starts a new one for the newly selected camera.
Is Live Check-in and Omnicam Live Streaming available on the Fleet App?e
Live Check-in and Omnicam Live Streaming are available on the web dashboard only in this release. AI Dashcam streaming remains available on the Fleet App as before, with Omnicam Fleet App support planned as a later release.
Why is Omnicam Live Streaming still labeled "Beta" in Canada and Mexico if it's available to every account there?
Livestream connection performance in Canada and Mexico is currently lower than in the US, and the root cause is still being investigated. All accounts in those markets get access, but the feature keeps the Beta label until performance meets the GA bar there.
Is Live Check-in also in Beta in Canada and Mexico?
No. Live Check-in is Generally Available in every market, including Canada and Mexico. Only Omnicam Live Streaming carries the Beta label there.
