How to install and verify Vehicle Gateway using Fleet App

    Introduction

    Fleet Managers, Fleet Admins, and Installers can now install the Vehicle Gateway and Dashcam with the Motive Fleet App without going to the Fleet Dashboard. The Fleet App supports the following workflows:

    1. Installing a new Vehicle Gateway device to a new vehicle
    2. Installing a new Vehicle Gateway device to an existing vehicle
    3. Replacing a Vehicle Gateway device on an existing vehicle
    4. Moving a Vehicle Gateway device from one vehicle to another vehicle
    Note: Check the installation video to walk you through the process. Also, you can only add the vehicle on the Fleet App after adding Vehicle Gateway.  

     

     

    Steps: Installing the Vehicle Gateway and Dashcam with the Fleet App

    This article walks through the first use case—installing a new Vehicle Gateway device on a new vehicle. For 2, 3, and 4 above, the Fleet App provides step-by-step guidance similar to the steps below.

    1. Log in to the Fleet App and tap Devices at the bottom of the screen.

    2. Tap Install Vehicle Gateway.

    3. Scan the serial number barcode of the new Vehicle Gateway. It can be found on the upper right corner of the sticker on the back of the Vehicle Gateway or on the packaging box in which the device arrived.

    4. Tap Continue once the serial number is identified.

    5. Tap Enter VIN Manually to enter the VIN of the vehicle yourself or scan it.

    6. If you tap Enter VIN Manually, enter the VIN.

    8. If you previously decided to scan the VIN, press Continue once it has been scanned.

    9. Check the vehicle details created based on VIN data like Make/Model/Year/Fuel Type data, are correct. Tap Confirm.

    10. Give the vehicle a unique ID consistent with your fleet naming convention.

    11. Once the vehicle details are confirmed, your vehicle will be added to your fleet and your selected Vehicle Gateway will be assigned to this vehicle. Once assigned, tap Continue.

    Verifying installation of Vehicle Gateway

    Verifying installation of Vehicle Gateway on the Fleet App

    1. Once the Vehicle Gateway is assigned, confirm you have the correct cable for installation by checking the label on the cable. Tap Next.

    1. Choose a recommended temporary location for mounting the Vehicle Gateway. Tap Next.

    1. Place the Vehicle Gateway at the selected location and connect the 15-pin connector to it, ensuring the other end connects to your vehicle’s diagnostic port without removing the adhesive backing. Tap Next after performing each step.

    1. Both LED lights on the Vehicle Gateway will illuminate. The left-side LED will turn green, indicating a strong cellular/GPS connection. Tap LEDs are solid.

    1. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled and that you are near the vehicle gateway. Once ready, tap Begin Test.

    1. The test may take up to 2 minutes to complete. You are then notified whether the test has passed or failed.

    Scenario 1: The pre-install test has passed

    All the settings have been verified and you can proceed by tapping Next.

     

    Scenario 2: The pre-install test has failed

    1. If the test fails, review the errors and refer to the troubleshooting instructions in the Learn More link before testing again.

    1. Run the test again to check for success.
    2. If you choose to Skip test, complete the installation details, but note that the installation is marked as incomplete even if you complete the physical installation. Tap Continue anyway.

    4. Tap I understand to proceed.

    1. Permanently mount the Vehicle Gateway on the desired location and tap Next.

    1. After mounting, enter the installation details, such as the Odometer reading, Engine hours, Power Source, and Installation photos, and tap Next. Peel off the adhesive backing and securely position the device using the provided zip ties. 

    1. The Vehicle Gateway installation is complete. Tap View this vehicle to see the vehicle profile with updated location information.

    4. The latest location information can be found on the newly installed Vehicle Gateway.

    Note: The location information may take time to update depending on the cellular connectivity in the location where you are installing the device.

    Viewing Dashcam images on the Fleet App

    Steps: Viewing Dashcam images on the Fleet App

    1. Log in to the Fleet App and tap Devices.

    2. Tap the arrow next to the Vehicle Gateway.

    3. Search the Vehicle Gateway serial number

    4. Tap the arrow next to the selected Vehicle Gateway. 

    5. The details about the selected Vehicle Gateway appear on the screen. Scroll to the Dashcam section and tap the arrow. This shows the images captured by Dashcam to ensure proper alignment.

    6.  Make necessary adjustments to the Dashcam for clearer images if required. Tap refresh to display the updated images.
