Introduction
Motive is introducing a simpler, more consistent way for users to sign in across the Motive Web Dashboard, Driver App, and Fleet App.
With identifier-first sign-in, users enter their email address or username first. Motive then identifies the appropriate account and guides the user to the correct sign-in method, such as a password or Single Sign-On (SSO), without requiring them to choose a region before they begin. This update is designed to make sign-in easier for drivers and fleet teams, especially for organisations that use SSO or operate across multiple regions.
What’s New?
- Identifier-first sign-in: Users enter their email address or Motive username as the first step.
- Automatic authentication routing: Motive uses account information to determine the appropriate authentication experience.
- A consistent experience across products: The new sign-in pattern is available across the Web Dashboard, Driver App, and Fleet App.
- Support for different authentication setups: The flow works with password-only, SSO-only, and hybrid organisations.
- Simpler regional routing: Users in one region are routed automatically. Region selection appears only when the identifier is associated with accounts in more than one Motive region.
How does this help our customers?
- Less sign-in friction: Users no longer need to know which region to select before entering their identifier.
- A more predictable experience: Drivers and fleet teams begin with the same simple step across Motive products.
- Better SSO alignment: SSO users are routed to the organisation’s identity provider after their account is identified.
- Support for global fleets: Users who work across the US/Mexico, Canada, and Europe can select the intended account when their identifier is associated with more than one region.
- No changes to access: This update does not change a user’s password, role, permissions, or company access.
How does the new sign-in experience work?
- Enter the email address or driver username associated with the account.
- Select Continue.
- If the identifier is associated with one account or region, Motive routes the user to the appropriate sign-in method.
- If the organisation only uses SSO, the user is directed to the organisation’s identity provider. If password login is enabled, only then does the user see the password step. Hybrid organisations will see both options available to them.
- Complete sign-in as usual.
Rollout Plan or Feature Go-Live date?

FAQs
What identifier should users enter?
Users should enter the email address or Motive username associated with their account. A phone number remains a contact or recovery method where configured; it is not the standard first-step identifier for this experience.
What happens for an SSO-only organisation?
After the user enters their identifier, Motive routes them directly to the organisation’s identity provider. Users in this flow are not asked to create or enter a Motive-managed password.
What happens for a password-only organisation?
After the identifier is recognised, the user sees the password step and continues with their existing Motive-managed password. The identifier-first update does not require a password reset.
What happens for an organisation that supports both SSO and password login?
The user enters their identifier first. Motive then displays the authentication options enabled for that account, which may include password login and Log in with SSO.
When will users still see region selection?
Region selection appears when the identifier is associated with accounts in more than one Motive region, such as US/Mexico, Canada, and Europe. The user selects the account they want to access, and Motive then applies that region’s authentication configuration.
What happens if a user has accounts in multiple regions?
Motive displays the regions associated with the identifier. The user selects the intended region, then continues with the password or SSO option available for that account.
Does identifier-first sign-in replace SSO?
No. It changes how users reach the appropriate authentication path. The organisation’s existing SSO configuration and identity provider continue to authenticate SSO users.
Does this change Public API authentication or permissions?
No. Public API authentication, account creation, post-login permissions, and existing access controls are not changed by this release.
What happens on a shared device?
The account lookup uses the identifier entered for the current sign-in attempt. It does not use the previous driver’s account. Drivers should enter their own email address or username each time they sign in.
What should users do if they cannot sign in?
Confirm the following before contacting Support:
- The correct email address or Motive username was entered.
- The user is using a supported app version.
- The correct region was selected if the user has accounts in multiple regions.
- The user is using the authentication method configured for their organisation.
If the user sees an unexpected region selector, cannot reach the organisation’s SSO provider, or is shown an authentication option that does not match the organisation’s setup, contact Motive Support.
