The Trips section in Fleet View helps fleet managers monitor and manage vehicle movement. This feature provides tools for tracking, analyzing trip data, and assigning vehicle movement.
Overview
Fleet View’s Trips section centralizes trip data, making it easier to access, analyze, and manage vehicle movement. It streamlines trip filtering, assignment, and annotation for improved fleet operations. Key features include:
- Comprehensive trip data: View trips, stops, and driver information all in one place.
- Trip management: Assign and annotate trips.
- Actionable insights: Analyze trip data for informed decision-making.
Viewing trips information
Accessing trip data
- Log in to the Fleet Dashboard, and go to Fleet View > Trips.

Assigning unidentified trips
Unidentified trips occur when a driver fails to connect to the Vehicle Gateway or was not statically paired to the vehicle. These trips must be assigned to a driver to maintain accurate records.

Note: Trips are strictly vehicle movement now; all compliance context has been removed. If your fleet has Logs drivers, visit Compliance Driving Events page, where you can manage compliance and assignments. Assigning driving events will also assign the associated trips (and vice versa). For more information on assignments from the new Driving Events page, click here. |

FAQs
What can I filter or sort by in the Trips section?
You can filter by date range, trip status, vehicle, driver, and other criteria. Sorting options include start time, distance, and duration.
Why do unidentified trips occur?
Unidentified trips occur when a driver doesn’t connect to the Vehicle Gateway, leaving the trip without a driver assignment.
How do I assign an unidentified trip to a driver?
Select the trip, click Assign, choose the driver, and save your changes.
Can I assign or annotate multiple trips at once?
Yes, use the bulk assign and annotate features to update several trips at the same time, which helps save time and ensures efficient management
Why can't I assign driving to someone when they are on an existing trip?
Trips can’t be assigned while the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle must be stationary to assign the trips.
Why does a trip in the Trips view not exactly match the driving I see on a driver’s log for that date?
Trips are vehicle-centric (full GPS movement for the vehicle), while logs are driver-centric (only the segments assigned to that driver, within their HOS day and duty statuses). Differences can occur when multiple drivers share a vehicle, some time is Unidentified or assigned to another driver, movement is logged as PC/YM, or the trip spans midnight/time-zone changes. Use Trips, Driver Logs and Unidentified Trips together to understand which parts of the vehicle trip belong to which driver.
Can I manually end a trip in progress from the Fleet Dashboard?
The Fleet Dashboard lets you view and filter in-progress/unbounded trips from Fleet View > Trips > Statuses > In Progress, but there is no self-serve workflow to manually end a trip. If you need a trip to be forcibly closed, contact Motive Support.
Does Motive generate a unique ID for each trip?
Not currently. The Trips section shows details such as driver ID, vehicle information, start/end times, distance, and notes, but it does not currently provide a separate automatically generated unique trip ID. If you need a unique reference outside Motive, use a combination such as vehicle ID, trip start time, and driver ID/name.
Why does a trip in the Trips view not exactly match the driving I see on a driver’s log for that date?
Trips are now strictly operational vehicle movements, while driving events are the driver’s driving duty status changes. Due to compliance regulations and rules, driving events and trips can differ which is why it is highly recommended to use the driving events page for assignment to logs drivers, and the trips page can be used to track vehicle movement.
