In Motive Analytics, Answers are your go-to reports for tracking, measuring, and analyzing crucial fleet operation data. This guide will walk you through accessing, customizing, and exporting answers for deeper analysis.
Overview
1. Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and click Analytics.
2. Click Browse.
3. Apply filters like Search, Created at, Date, Type, Created by, and Modified by to have better access to the required information.
4. In the Type dropdown, there are two options:
- Answer
- Dashboard
Create a New Answer
1. Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and click Analytics.
2. Click Create.
3. Click Answer.
2. The Custom Answer Builder opens, displaying:
- A sidebar with available data points.
- A blank Search bar.
2. The Search bar displays each phrase as a text box once you click outside of it. Dates appear in purple, measures in green, attributes in blue, and filters in gray.
3. Once the keywords are selected, click Go to form the answer.
4. Once done, select the change visualization icon to get a palette of chart types you can choose from.
5. Click Save once done.
6. A pop-up appears. Fill in the details and then click Save answer to finish.
AI Answers
AI Answers allows users to ask a question in natural language instead of manually creating an Answer with the custom Answer builder. AI Answers instantly pulls relevant data from the Motive platform and generates an Answer that contains comprehensive analysis and actionable insights in an easy-to-understand visual.
- In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Analytics from the left-hand side menu.
- Click Ask AI.
- Users can select one of the suggested prompts or ask a new question about their fleet’s data.
- Users can take the following actions with the AI-generated Answer:
- Pin the Answer to a dashboard
- Save the Answer to easily access it from the Browse page
- Download the Answer as a PNG, XLXS, or CSV
- Edit the Answer to customize it further
- Switch between a table view and a chart view
- Users can also access AI answers from the snowflake icon in the upper right corner of Answers that are pinned to dashboards.

Answer Customizations in Motive Analytics
1. Select an exciting answer from the list and click Make a copy.
2. Select keywords from the list as mentioned above.
3. Click the edit icon.
3. Select the settings icon to change the KPI chart to another measure or attribute.

Using Filters in Motive Analytics Answer
1. Click the Motive Analytics tab.
2. Click Create.
3. Click Answer.
4. In the column information in the left side menu, click the Add as filter icon.
3. Select the legend labels to toggle the values on or off.
4. To add a filter from the chart axes:

- While viewing your Answer as a chart, click the chart axis you want to filter on, and then select 'Filter'.
- The filter modals for attributes and measures are different. The modal for an attribute looks like this:
For an attribute filter, select values to Include or Exclude. You can also select all or clear all. If there are too many values, you can use the filter search bar to find the ones you want.
5. For a measure filter, select Add condition.
6. Click Apply.
Understanding Group Filters in Answers

Change Axis Options
1. Locate the desired answer from the Motive Analytics Browse page. Select Edit.
2. Click Axis.
3. Click the Aggregate option in the axis menu, and select an alternative from the list of options.
- The options include Total, Avg, Min, Max, Total Count, Unique Count, Std Deviation, and Variance.
4. Click Filters to add, change, or remove filters.
5. A pop-up appears, select + Add a condition.
6. Select the comparison option from the Condition dropdown.
7. Set the relevant numerical limits.
| Note: When the between operator is selected, a minimum and maximum value must be set. The "is in" and "is not in" operators require a list of values separated by semicolons (";"). |
8. Select the edit chart configuration in the upper right of your chart for Conditional formatting.
9. The Edit chart panel appears on the Configure menu.
10. Select an operator. The valid options for measures are less than, greater than, less than or equal to, greater than or equal to, equal to, not equal to, and between.
11. Select the conditional value, or in the case of the between operator, the conditional range.
12. Choose the new color from the color selector.
13. Click Apply.
Once changes are applied, the axes are changed, and graphs are revised.
14. Select the Sort option in the axis menu, and choose an alternative from the list of options: Ascending or Descending.
15. Click Rename, Edit, or Remove to further edit the axis.
To change the position of an axis, click the Position in the axis menu, and then select an alternative from the list of options: Left or Right.
To Rename an Axis

- Open the axis menu (usually by right-clicking or selecting the axis on the chart).
- Click on the Rename option.
- Type the new axis name.
- Press Enter/Return or click outside the text box to apply the new name.
To Edit Axis Settings:

- Select the axis to open the axis editor.
- In the editor, you can make the following changes as per requirement.
In the Edit Axis menu, make the changes to the axis configuration and number format:
- Name: Rename the axis label.
- Position: Set the axis position to either Left or Right.
- Min: Define the minimum value shown on the axis (overrides default 0).
- Max: Define the maximum value shown on the axis.
- Category: Format axis values as Number, Percentage, or Currency.
- Unit: Choose how numbers are displayed — Auto, None, Thousand (K), Million (M), Billion (B), or Trillion (T).
- Negative values: Select how negative numbers appear — -1234, 1234-, or (1234).
Hiding/showing values in an Answer
1. Click Slice with Colour.
2. Click the metrics that need to be hidden or shown.
Hide or show a sliced value
1. Right-click the item you want to exclude (e.g., a column or a donut wedge).
2. Select Exclude 'Metrics'.
Changing Chart Colors
1. Click Chart Configuration icon in the upper-right corner.
2. Select the column or value you would like to change.
3. Click Slice with Color.
4. Use the color picker to choose a new color to represent that value.
Set colors from the legend
A legend appears next to or below the chart when slicing with color or using multiple columns on an axis.
- To change a color, select the color circle next to a legend item and choose a new color or enter a HEX value.
Change the chart gradient
- Select Edit under Gradient.
- In the Gradient pop-up, define the colors for the Low, Midpoint, and High values using the color selector dropdowns.
- In the text boxes below the color selectors, you can numerically define the low, midpoint, and high points.
- Click Save.
Showing Data Labels
Data labels can be displayed for every measure in the chart or configured separately for each measure.
- Click the Chart Configuration icon in the upper-right corner.
- Click Settings
- Check the All Labels checkbox.
4. Select the desired measure and check Data Labels checkbox.

What types of answers can I create?
Motive Analytics supports most Safety, Tracking & Telematics, Fuel, and Compliance data that you’re used to seeing in the Motive Platform. Motive Analytics supports a wide variety of answer types, including tables, bar charts, pie charts, line graphs, heat maps, and more. The choice of visualization depends on the data and the insights you want to extract
How often is data refreshed in answers?
Our data is refreshed every 3-12 hours and is not currently able to be real-time. Each screen should have a timestamp that displays the last refreshed date and time.
Can I edit or duplicate an existing answer?
Yes, you can edit or duplicate existing answers to customize them for your specific needs. This can be done from the Answers list view in the Analytics tab.
How do I apply filters to an answer?
You can apply filters to answers in several ways: Search bar: Enter keywords to filter data. Column header/axis label: Select Filter from the column header or axis label. Answer Builder: Click the Add as filter icon beside the measure in the left side menu. Chart legend: Select legend labels to toggle values on or off. Chart axes: Click the axis and select Filter to define conditions.
What are measures and attributes in answers?
Measures: Numeric values that can be aggregated (for example, sum, average, count) to generate insights, such as total miles driven or revenue. Attributes: Categorical fields used to group, filter, or segment data in an answer, such as vehicle type, driver name, or region.
Can I use custom calculations in my answers?
Yes, you can use formulas to create custom calculations in your answers. These can be used to create new metrics or transform existing ones.
What is drill-down functionality, and how does it work?
Drill-down functionality allows you to explore deeper levels of data within an answer by clicking on specific elements.
