Card Types

The Motive Card is a corporate fleet card that combines flexibility, security, and control. Understanding available card types and payment methods helps you manage expenses efficiently and securely.

Overview

The Motive Card streamlines fleet and business spending with broad acceptance and detailed controls. It can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted, and spending rules can be tailored to your company’s policies.

  • Universal acceptance: The Motive Card works at any merchant that accepts Mastercard. This makes fueling and on-the-road purchases simple and consistent for drivers.
  • Flexible payment methods: The card supports magstripe, Europay Mastercard Visa (EMV) chip, and near-field communication (NFC) contactless payments. These options ensure drivers can complete purchases securely at both modern and legacy terminals.
  • Assignment flexibility: Cards can be assigned to vehicles, drivers, or fleet users. This flexibility supports a variety of operational models and ensures accountability for spending.
  • Spend controls: Admins can set spending limits, category restrictions, and policy rules. These controls reduce the risk of unauthorized purchases and simplify expense reconciliation.

Basics

Motive currently offers a physical Mastercard fleet card for business use. Cards can be assigned to an individual driver, a vehicle, or a fleet user depending on your operational needs.

The Motive Card supports three secure payment methods, ensuring compatibility with most payment terminals:

  • Magstripe: Traditional swipe-based payments.
  • EMV chip: Chip-enabled transactions that provide stronger authentication and added fraud protection.
  • NFC contactless: Tap-to-pay for fast, touch-free purchases.

Both EMV chip and NFC contactless payments offer advanced security features that help reduce fraud risk.

Customizing assignment and controls

Admins can configure card assignments and controls to match business rules:

  • Assignments: Link a card to a specific driver, vehicle, or fleet user to provide clear accountability.
  • Controls: Apply spending limits, restrict categories such as fuel-only, or block specific merchant types.

These settings give fleets flexibility while ensuring purchases stay within policy.
