Key features include:
- Centralized hardware management: Easily view and manage all devices in one place, streamlining oversight across your fleet.
- Streamlined installation: Follow simple step-by-step workflows to quickly install and verify devices, reducing downtime and setup errors.
- Real-time status visibility: Monitor device status in real-time to identify connectivity or operational issues early, enabling prompt resolutions.
- On-the-go flexibility: Assign or unassign devices, check live dashcam views, and access device details remotely, making it easy to manage hardware from anywhere.
Basics
The devices section provides a comprehensive list of all the hardware in your fleet, organized by device type. Each entry displays the current status of the device, helping you quickly identify any issues.
Device types:
- Vehicle Gateways (VGs): Core telematics devices for vehicles that track location, engine data, and more.
- Dashcams (DC-53/DC-54): Road-facing and dual-facing cameras that record safety events.
- AI Omnicams: Cameras that provide a 360-degree view around the vehicle for full coverage.
- Asset Gateways: GPS tracking devices for non-powered assets like trailers and equipment.
- Sensors: Environmental sensors that monitor conditions such as temperature and humidity.
Installing a device
The Motive Fleet App provides a guided workflow to simplify the installation and assignment of new devices.
To install and assign a new device:
- Log in to the Motive Fleet App.
Tap on More > Devices.
- Tap the Install button for the type of device you are installing (such as Install Vehicle Gateway).
- When prompted, scan the serial number barcode on the device.
Assign the device to a vehicle or asset. You can select an existing entity or create a new one directly in the app.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the physical installation. The app provides step-by-step guidance, including recommended mounting locations and cable connections.
- After installation, the app will guide you through a verification process to confirm the device is powered on, connected, and communicating properly.
Understanding the Devices page
To access the Devices page, tap Devices in the bottom menu of the Motive Fleet App.
The main screen displays a sortable list of your devices, organized by type. Use the search bar to find a specific device by serial number, or search by vehicle VIN or asset name. You can also filter results by device type or status.
Viewing device details
Tapping any device in the list opens its detail view. In this view, you'll find:
- Device status: The current operational state of the device.
- Installation photos: Images captured during setup to verify correct placement.
- VIN/Asset name: The vehicle or asset assigned to the device.
- Last activity: The date and time of the device’s most recent communication with the Motive platform.
- Device actions: Options such as unassigning the device or checking the live view for dashcams to ensure proper alignment.
Verifying a Vehicle Gateway installation
To make sure your Vehicle Gateway is installed correctly and collecting accurate data, the Motive Fleet App includes a built-in verification process.
After the physical installation, the app will walk you through a series of checks:
- Power: Confirms the gateway is receiving power from the vehicle.
- GPS and LTE: Verifies a strong GPS signal and cellular network connection.
- Telematics: Confirms communication with the vehicle’s engine control module (ECM).
- Odometer and engine hours: Verifies that mileage and engine hours are being read correctly.
- Cable, WIFI, and Bluetooth: Confirms the correct cable type and verifies Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth connectivity
You’ll also be asked to take photos of the installation and add any notes. This creates a full record of the setup for future reference.
FAQs
Can I install a new device using the Fleet App?
Yes. The app gives you a step-by-step guide for installing and verifying new devices, including Vehicle Gateways and dashcams.
What does setup needed mean for a device?
Setup needed means the device is powered on but needs more steps before it can fully work. For example, a new dashcam might need to be calibrated by driving the vehicle for a short time.
How can I check if a dashcam is installed correctly?
In the device’s detail view, you can use the live view feature to see what the camera sees and check alignment. You can also look at the photos taken during installation.
What should I do if a Vehicle Gateway shows as offline?
Offline means the device isn’t sending data. Make sure it’s plugged in tightly, the engine is on, and the vehicle has a good cell signal. If the issue continues, check the troubleshooting guides in the Help Center or contact Motive support.
How can I check if a specific ELD (Vehicle Gateway) is registered to another company in Motive?
For privacy and security reasons, Motive does not show which company an ELD belongs to in the Fleet Dashboard. As a Fleet Admin, you can only see whether a device is active/assigned within your own account. If you receive a Vehicle Gateway and are unsure if it’s still linked to another Motive customer or usable at all, please contact Motive Support with the device’s serial number and your company name/DOT. Support can verify on the backend whether the device is available to be assigned to your account or if it is deactivated, but they will not disclose other customers’ account details.
How can I locate or verify a Dashcam by serial number if it isn’t currently installed on a vehicle?
Go to Device Hub > Cameras in the Fleet Dashboard and search by the camera’s serial number. If the camera belongs to your fleet, it will appear there either assigned to a vehicle or as inventory with no vehicle attached. If it does not appear at all, it is not on your account (it may be unassigned or assigned to another Motive customer). In that case, contact Motive Support with the serial number so we can confirm its ownership. Cameras assigned to other fleets cannot be added to or used by your account.
How do I reactivate a deactivated ELD device (Vehicle Gateway)?
As a Fleet Admin, check the device in Admin > Devices. If it’s still on your account with an active subscription, you can reassign it to a vehicle and reinstall it. If the device or its subscription has been fully deactivated, contact your Motive Account Manager or Motive Support to have the subscription re-enabled and the device reassigned.
Can we transfer Motive ELD devices (Vehicle Gateways/dashcams) from one company account to another?
You can reassign devices freely between vehicles within the same company, but customers cannot move devices directly between Motive company accounts using the Dashboard. Each device serial is tied to a specific account and subscription. If you need to move hardware between companies (for example, after a sale or lease change), contact Motive Support or your Account Manager with the serials and both companies’ details so we can verify ownership and reassign the devices.
How do I connect a truck to my company account if it is not currently connected?
A truck is connected to your company in Motive when its assigned hardware (such as a Vehicle Gateway or Dashcam) is installed, powered, and communicating. A fleet admin should go to Devices, scan the device serial number, assign it to the correct vehicle, and complete the verification flow. If the issue is with a Dashcam that is not powering on or not connected, use the relevant dashcam troubleshooting articles. If the device still does not appear, check its status in the Device Hub or contact Motive Support.
Why is my Dashcam serial number not recognized when I enter it manually in the mobile app?
Make sure you are using the Motive Fleet App, not the Driver App. Dashcam serial numbers are installed and assigned from Devices in the Fleet App. The Driver App does not support manually adding a Dashcam by serial number. Instead, drivers should go to Logs > Current Vehicle > Manage Dashcam to verify a connected camera. If the serial number still is not recognized in the Fleet App, contact Motive Support to confirm whether the device belongs to your fleet account.
