Unfamiliar Driver Alerts

Unfamiliar Driver Alerts use Motive’s AI Dashcam and real‑time Face Match to capture the driver’s face and trigger an alert when an unfamiliar person is detected.

Overview

Unfamiliar Driver Alerts in the Motive platform add a dedicated security layer that verifies who is behind the wheel during an active trip and notifies your team in real time when an unfamiliar driver is detected.

  • Misuse prevention: This feature helps safeguard vehicles and cargo by detecting unfamiliar drivers in real time, supporting theft detection and vehicle misuse to minimize losses across your fleet.
  • Faster response: Gives fleet managers a real-time alert that includes vehicle and location details and a clear image of the driver, allowing them to take action in the moment.

To create the alert, follow the steps outlined here.

Note: This feature is currently in Beta and is available to fleets in Mexico. It will be available to all other Motive customers in March 2026.

Unfamiliar driver

Definition

Powered by real-time Face Match, this alert notifies fleet managers when an unknown driver is operating a vehicle if it has an AI Dashcam and Vehicle Gateway installed.

Special settings

  • Face Detection Event: Once a vehicle reaches a speed of greater than 5 km/hour, the AI Dashcam captures the driver’s face and compares it against the fleet’s catalog of registered driver profiles. If it does not match any profile in the stored profile, an alert is triggered.
  • Unfamiliar profile creation: When the system recognizes a human in the vehicle, but that face does not match any stored driver profile, an unfamiliar driver profile is created, and an alert is triggered. Admins can manage unfamiliar drivers and identify drivers in the Fleet Dashboard.
  1. Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Drivers > Face Match
  1. Click Identify > Identify driver > Driver Name and select a driver to match the unfamiliar driver to a driver in the system.

Best practices

  • To maximize the effectiveness of your Unfamiliar Driver Alerts, Motive recommends ensuring that at least 80% of your fleet is already identified using  Face Match before activating these alerts. This ensures unfamiliar detections are true exceptions instead of alerts for known, authorized drivers.

FAQs

Which vehicles are compatible with this feature?

The alert only applies to vehicles equipped with a Vehicle Gateway and an AI Dashcam.

How often will I receive an alert for the same unknown driver?

The alert only triggers once when an unfamiliar profile is first created. Subsequent trips by that same unidentified person will add more pictures to the existing unfamiliar profile, but will not send additional alerts.

What happens if the driver is authorized but not in the system, like a yard worker?

Currently, anyone not in the registered catalog, including authorized employees like yard workers moving vehicles, may be flagged as unfamiliar. Fleet managers can resolve this by marking these individuals as safe or adding them to the driver catalog.

Does the vehicle need to be moving?

Yes. To prevent false positives during maintenance or loading, alerts are only triggered when the vehicle is in motion (for example, when the speed exceeds 5 km/h).
