Stationary Time is the time a regulated vehicle remains stopped while the Logs driver is still in Driving duty status. This feature ensures that when a vehicle comes to a stop, the system prompts the driver to confirm whether they are still driving or ready to change their duty status, keeping Hours of Service (HOS) logs accurate and compliant as per 4.4.1.2.
Overview
When a driver stops their vehicle, their duty status remains in Driving until they either manually change their status or the system automatically transitions them to On Duty after showing a prompt.
It is important to note that the time spent stationary in the Driving duty status only impacts Compliance Driving Events. Trips will not be impacted and will end according to their own continuation threshold after the vehicle comes to a stop.
Key features include:
- Timer prompt: After 5 minutes of being stationary, the Motive Driver App asks the driver if they are still driving, with a 1-minute countdown.
- Automatic On Duty switch: If the driver does not respond to the prompt and the timer runs out, their status automatically changes from Driving to On Duty, as per regulations.
- Continue Driving: If the driver confirms they are still driving, their previous Driving status continues and is reflected on their log, even if the vehicle isn’t actually moving. It is important for drivers to ensure that their duty statuses are updated correctly to reflect their activity.
- Manual status change: Drivers can manually change their duty status from Driving to any other duty status (On Duty, Sleeper Berth, or Off Duty) at any point once they are stationary. They can click the ‘Driving’ button (picture below) and change their duty status. They do not have to wait for 6 minutes to pass to change their duty status.
How Stationary Time works
Stationary time is the time between the vehicle coming to a stop and the driver’s duty status changing regardless of whether it is changed automatically or manually.
| Note: The duration spent in stationary time is counted as ‘Driving’ on the driver’s log and counts towards their remaining shift and drive time. The driver will remain in 'Driving' till their duty status is automatically or manually changed from Driving to another duty status (Off Duty/On Duty/Sleeper Berth). |
What happens when the vehicle stops
When the vehicle stops moving, the driver is still in Driving duty status. After 5 minutes of remaining stationary, the driver is shown a prompt on the Driver App.
The prompt with timer
- After the vehicle has been stationary for 5 minutes, the Driver App displays a prompt asking, Are you still driving?
- A 1-minute countdown begins.
- The driver has three options:
-
Do nothing: If there is no input from the driver for 6 minutes, their status is automatically switched from Driving to On Duty.
- The 6 minutes of stationary time will count towards the driver’s Driving duty status up until the point their duty status is automatically changed to On Duty.
- Click ‘No, change duty status…’: Opens the status selector so the driver can manually switch to another duty status like On Duty, Off Duty, or Sleeper Berth.
- Click ‘Yes, keep driving’: Dismisses the prompt and keeps the driver in Driving duty status, even if they are still stationary.
-
Do nothing: If there is no input from the driver for 6 minutes, their status is automatically switched from Driving to On Duty.
Automatic switch to On Duty
If the driver does not respond to the timer prompt before the 1-minute countdown ends:
- The system automatically changes the driver's duty status to On Duty, as per regulations.
- On the driver's log, the Driving event ends at the moment the countdown expires (6 minutes after the vehicle stopped), and On Duty begins right after.
Manual switch to any other Duty Status
If the driver clicks ‘No, change duty status…’ on the prompt or initiates the change from the driving lock screen:
- The driver is taken to the quick status selector screen, where they can change their duty status, add a location, and add notes.
- Once the driver clicks Save, the Driving event ends on their log at the moment the driver saves the manual duty status, and the manual duty status begins right after.
Continue Driving
If the driver clicks ‘Yes, keep driving’ on the prompt:
- Their duty status remains Driving on the log.
- The Driving event continues uninterrupted until the driver manually changes their status.
- If the driver moves (exceeds 5 mph/8 kph) and comes to a stop again, the driver will be shown the prompt with a timer again.
- If the driver remains stationary after selecting Continue Driving, the system will show a follow-up prompt to ensure they are aware they are still in the Driving duty status, even if the vehicle is stationary (see below).
The prompt without a timer
If the driver selected ‘Yes, keep driving’ on the previous prompt but remains stationary, the Driver App shows a second prompt to ensure the driver knows that they are still in the Driving duty status. This prompt will not automatically switch the driver out of Driving after 5 minutes. That is only possible if the driver moves the vehicle (exceeds 5 mph/8 kph) and comes to a stop again.
- This prompt also asks "Are you still driving?" but does not have a countdown timer.
- The driver has two options:
- Click ‘No, change duty status…’: Opens the status selector so the driver can manually switch to another duty status like On Duty, Off Duty, or Sleeper Berth.
- Click ‘Yes, keep driving’: Dismisses the prompt and keeps the driver in Driving duty status, even if they are still stationary.
If the driver does nothing, they will remain in Driving till they manually switch to another duty status. This prompt does not automatically change the driver's status. It is informational and gives the driver a chance to update their log.
Note: The non-timer prompt does not auto-dismiss. It stays on screen until the driver responds, taps the close button, or the vehicle starts moving.
Changing duty status manually
Drivers can change their duty status at any time during the stationary period:
- Before the timer prompt appears: If the driver changes status within the first 5 minutes of being stationary, the Driving event ends at the exact time of the manual change.
- From the timer prompt: Tapping ‘No, change duty status…’ on the prompt opens the status selector. The Driving event ends at the moment the driver confirms the change.
- After selecting ‘Yes, keep driving’: The driver can still manually change their status at any point. The Driving event ends at the time of that manual change.
FAQs
When does the timer prompt appear?
The timer prompt appears after your regulated vehicle exceeds 5 mph/8 kph, comes to a stop, and remains stationary for 5 minutes.
What happens if I don't respond to the timer prompt?
If you don't respond within 1 minute, your duty status is automatically changed to On Duty. Your Driving event on the log will end at the time the countdown expires (after 6 minutes).
Can I change my duty status before the prompt appears?
Yes. You can manually change your duty status at any time after stopping. You do not need to wait for the prompt.
What is the difference between the timer prompt and the non-timer prompt?
The timer prompt has a 1-minute countdown and will automatically switch you to On Duty if you don't respond.
The non-timer prompt has no countdown and will not change your status automatically; it only reminds you to update your log if you are in the Driving duty status but remain stationary for long periods of time.
How often does the non-timer prompt repeat?
If you remain stationary after selecting Continue Driving, the non-timer prompt appears every 5 minutes. If the Driver App is in the background, you will receive a notification every 5 minutes instead.
Does this feature affect my trips?
No. Stationary Time applies to your driving duty status and your HOS log, so it only impacts Compliance Driving Events. It does not affect trips, as they are strictly vehicle motion.
