The Coach tab in Performance Hub gives fleets one place to track the performance of all their coaches and measure how effectively coaches improve driver behavior. Coaching Score and supporting metrics help fleets identify coaching gaps faster, compare coaches more fairly with workload metrics, and improve coaching consistency across teams.
Overview
- Coaching Score: A daily-refreshing Coaching Score helps fleets measure whether coaching is reducing repeat behaviors over a rolling 28-day period.
- Score calculation: Coaching score starts at 100 and drops when a driver repeats a coached behavior within 28 days, with larger deductions in cases where repeat behaviors occur soon after coaching.
- Coach performance metrics: Metrics for repeat events, assigned drivers and groups, coached events, dismissed events, and average days to coach give admins and safety leaders more context when reviewing coach performance.
- Custom coach performance ranges: Admins can customize what counts as Fair, Good, and Excellent coaching score range from the admin settings to better fit their fleet
- Permission-based access: Users need View Coaching Scores permission to access the Coaches tab and Manage Coaching Scores permission to edit score ranges.
- Audit visibility: Changes made to coaching score ranges are shown in the Audit Log for accountability and change tracking.
Accessing the Coaches tab
- Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and go to Performance > Coaches.
- Coaches tab displays a ranked list of all the coaches in your fleet with the following details for each coach for the last 28 days as of any day on which you are viewing the metrics on the Coaches tab.
- Coach: Name and email of the coach.
- Coaching Score: Coaching Score is a rolling 28-day score that refreshes daily. Each coach starts at 100, and the score decreases when a driver they coached repeats that behavior within 28 days of coaching. The earlier the repeat happens after coaching, the larger the deduction; repeats that occur later within the 28-day window result in smaller deductions.
Note:
|
- Repeat Events: This shows the percentage of repeat events of all the drivers which were coached by that respective coach. A repeat event is an event that occurs within 28 days of coaching a driver on that same behavior. Lower is better. Hovering over the percentage shows the top five repeat behaviors.
- Assigned Drivers / Groups: Count of drivers and groups a coach is assigned. This metric provides the workload context for listed coaches.
- Coached Events: Percentage of coachable events the coach marked as Coached in the past 28-day time period.
- Dismissed Events: Percentage of coachable events dismissed by the coach in the past 28-day time period. A high dismissal rate should be reviewed to ensure that coaches are reviewing events before dismissing them
- Avg Days to Coach: The average number of days a coach takes to mark an event as Coached from the day the event is generated. This metric is also calculated over the rolling 28-day window and refreshes daily.
Filtering and sorting
- Coach filter: Use this filter to search and select coaches by their name.
- Sorting: You can use the following sorting options:
- Coaching Score (Lowest) to see coaches with the lowest score at the top of the list. This is the sorting order applied to the list by default.
- Coaching Score (Highest) to see coaches with the highest score at the top of the list.
- Coach Name (A–Z / Z–A) to sort in alphabetical order from A to Z or Z to A.
- Assigned Drivers (Most/Least) to see coaches with the most or least number of assigned drivers at the top.
- Avg Days to Coach (Fastest/Slowest) to see coaches at the top that take the least or most amount of time to coach on average.
Coaching Score calculation
The Coaching Score helps fleets understand how effectively a coach is reducing repeat unsafe behaviors through coaching. It is designed to show how coaching helped drivers avoid repeating the same behavior. Here’s how the Coaching score is calculated:
Coaching Score = 100 − [(Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100]
Where:
Numerator = Sum of (repeat events × repeat recency factor) in the past 28 days,
Denominator = Total events in the past 28 days from coached drivers on the behaviors you coached them on.
Some definitions and caveats:
- Repeat event: A coached behavior that a driver repeats within 28 days after their coaching on that behavior.
- Repeat recency factor = [1 − (days after coaching ÷ 28)]
- It is a weight between 0 and 1 that is highest when the repeat happens immediately after coaching and lowest when it happens near the end of the window.
- Every coach starts with a score of 100.
- If a driver repeats the same behavior within 28 days after being coached on it, points are deducted from the score.
- A repeat that happens soon after coaching lowers the score more than one that happens later in the 28-day window. For example, a repeated unsafe behavior on day 1 after coaching deducts far more points than a repeat on day 27 after coaching.
- Motive averages the point deductions across coached events in the rolling window and subtracts that amount from 100.
- The score refreshes every day and always reflects the most recent past 28 days of repeat events and coaching activity.
- Events that are dismissed are not used in the repeat event count or coached event count for the score.
- Pending review events can be treated as possible repeats, but they are not counted as coached events.

FAQs
What does the Coaching Score mean?
Coaching Score is a 0–100 score that shows how effectively a coach helps drivers avoid repeating the same unsafe behavior after coaching. A higher score means coached drivers are less likely to repeat that behavior within the scoring window.
How is the Coaching Score calculated?
Every coach starts at 100. If a driver repeats the same behavior within 28 days after being coached on it, points are deducted. Repeats that happen sooner after coaching reduce the score more than repeats that happen later in the 28-day window.
How often does the Coaching Score update?
The Coaching Score refreshes daily and always reflects the most recent 28 days of coaching activity.
Why did a coach’s score go down even if they completed coaching sessions?
The Coaching Score is based on coaching effectiveness, not just coaching activity. A coach’s score can go down when drivers repeat the same unsafe behavior after they were coached on it.
Are dismissed events included in the Coaching Score?
No. Dismissed events are excluded from the repeat event count and the coached event count used to calculate the Coaching Score.
Can I customize what counts as Fair, Good, and Excellent coach performance range?
Yes. Admins with the Manage coaching scores permission can update the Coach Performance Ranges from admin settings to define what score ranges count as Fair, Good, and Excellent for their fleet.
Why can I not see the Coaches tab or edit Coach Performance Ranges?
Users need the View coaching scores permission to access the Coaches tab. To update Coach Performance Ranges, users also need the Manage coaching scores permission.
