Introduction
Custom Safety Event Tags give fleets a way to apply their own business-specific labels to safety events such as at-fault vs. not-at-fault collisions, animal strikes, or curb strikes, beyond what Motive's default event types capture. Tags are searchable, filterable, and available for reporting, giving fleets better visibility into patterns that matter to their business.
What's new?
A new Custom Tags module is available in Admin > Safety > Unsafe Behaviour Detection.
Authorised users can create free-form tags with a required description and apply them to safety events as secondary labels. Tags appear across the Safety platform:
- Events Listing Page: filter events by custom tag under the Behaviour filter; applied tags appear in the event row and quick-view pop-up.
- Event detail page: apply, remove, and view tags under the Custom Tags section.
- Coaching session: tags can be applied during coaching; changes update the event record.
- Fleet App: dynamic Behaviours filter includes custom tags; tags can be added from event detail view.
- Driver App: custom tags are visible to drivers for additional event context.
How does this help fleets?
- Categorise incidents with labels specific to your business, beyond default Motive event types.
- Filter and search events by custom tag to find patterns faster.
- Improve reporting accuracy by pulling tag data through Data Bridge, Reports Hub, and public APIs.
- Give drivers context with tags visible directly in the Driver App.
How to access this feature
Go to Admin > Safety > Unsafe Behaviour Detection to create your first custom tag.
Permissions required:
- Create/edit/delete tags: Manage organisation settings
- Apply/remove tags: Manage behaviour tags
Additional changes in this release
Safety Event Risk Categories have been deprecated. Risk Category filters have been removed from the Events Listing Page, Safety > Drivers page, and Coaching tab. The Safety > Drivers page now reflects the same metrics shown in individual driver safety profiles.
Rollout plan
- Launch date: 8 September 2026
- Availability: All markets - United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom
Important notes
- Custom tags cannot currently be applied to speeding events or video recall requests.
- Custom tags are not yet available in Motive Analytics - planned for a future update.
- Deleting a tag removes it from all events where it was applied.
- Tag changes made during a coaching session update the event record but do not reflect in real time during the active session.
- All tag creation, modification, and deletion activity is logged under Admin > Audit Log.
