Team driving allows multiple drivers to share driving responsibilities in the same vehicle, maximizing efficiency and ensuring compliance with hours of service (HOS) regulations. Understanding how to properly add, manage, and remove co-drivers within the Motive platform is essential for safe and compliant long-haul operations.
Overview
Team driving is a critical feature for fleets looking to increase vehicle uptime by rotating drivers and managing rest periods efficiently. With Motive, you can easily add co-drivers, ensure accurate log management, and maintain compliance.
- Increased efficiency: Keep vehicles on the road longer by alternating drivers.
- Seamless compliance: Automatic HOS calculations for all team members.
- Easy management: Add, switch, or remove co-drivers with just a few taps.
- Accurate recordkeeping: All logs are linked and accessible for both drivers and fleet admins.
Basics
Team driving involves two or more drivers sharing driving and rest duties in the same vehicle. While one driver operates the vehicle (primary driver), the co-driver rests in the sleeper berth. This method helps fleets cover greater distances without exceeding HOS limits.
Both US and Canadian HOS regulations recognize team driving, provided all drivers' logs are properly maintained and linked to the same vehicle. Accurate log linkage ensures correct HOS calculations and helps avoid violations.
In Motive, there is always one primary driver—whose HOS clocks are affected by driving—and up to nine co-drivers logged in concurrently. Co-drivers can rest, complete other tasks, or prepare for their next shift, while their duty status is properly tracked and compliant.
Adding a co-driver
To start a team driving session in the Motive Driver App, follow these steps:
- Prerequisites: Ensure all drivers have Motive accounts and are assigned to the same fleet.
Open the Driver App, then go to Settings > Co-drivers.
Tap Add Co-driver.
The primary driver searches for and selects the co-driver. The co-driver enters their password to authenticate. Repeat for each additional co-driver (up to 9).
- Once added, all logged-in drivers’ names appear in list view on the Co-drivers screen. One is marked as Primary Driver, and the rest as Co-Drivers.
Changing co-drivers in logs
Maintaining accurate logs is essential for compliance.
Drivers
Go to your daily log in the Driver App and tap the log entry.
- Select the Log Form tab.
- Enter or remove your co-driver’s name in the designated field.
Fleet users:
- In the Fleet Dashboard, locate the driver’s log.
- Suggest a log edit to add or remove a co-driver’s name. The driver must approve this edit in the app.
- To reassign driving periods between co-drivers, both drivers must be listed as co-drivers on each other’s log forms. Suggest the reassignment, and both drivers must approve for the change to take effect.
Removing a Co-driver
When a trip ends or a co-driver leaves the vehicle, follow these steps to remove them:
- The primary driver goes to the Settings > Co-drivers.
Tap the three-dot menu next to the co-driver you wish to remove, and then tap Remove.
- Confirm the removal in the prompt to complete the process.
After removal, the co-driver is logged out, and their log is unlinked from the vehicle. Remaining drivers stay connected. If the primary driver logs out, all co-drivers are also logged out.
Note: Drivers should certify their logs before ending a team session or logging out.
Viewing drivers in the Driver App
During a team driving session, both primary and co-drivers can view critical information:
Co-driver
- Full access to their own profile overview, logs, inspection reports, and account & security settings.
Primary driver
- Open the Driver App and go to Settings > Co-drivers.
- Tap the three-dot menu next to the co-driver's name, then select View account.
- While driving, use the Co-Driver button on the lock screen to quickly access co-driver information without leaving the driving screen.
Adding a co-driver in the Fleet Dashboard
Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and go to Compliance > Logs.
- Select the desired log for the Driver whose log you want to add a Co-Driver to.
- Click Edit > Form and scroll down to Others and select a Codriver from the dropdown.
Click on Save
- The log edit will be listed as Pending Approval and sent to the Driver to review and either Approve or Reject.
FAQs
How many co-drivers can be added to a vehicle?
You can add up to 9 co-drivers plus one primary driver, for a total of 10 drivers logged in at once.
What happens when the primary driver logs out?
When the primary driver logs out, all co-drivers are automatically logged out as well.
Can a co-driver drive the vehicle without switching to primary driver?
No. Only the primary driver’s HOS clocks are affected by vehicle movement. To switch, the new driver must become the primary driver in the app.
How do I make sure my co-driver’s name appears on my daily log?
Enter your co-driver’s name in the Log Form tab or have your fleet admin suggest a log edit for you to approve.
Can fleet admins reassign driving time between drivers?
Yes, but only if both drivers are listed as co-drivers on each other’s log forms. Both must approve the reassignment.
What should I do before ending a team driving session?
Always certify your logs before logging out or removing a co-driver to ensure compliance.
