Locate Asset helps drivers find trailers, equipment, and other tracked assets from the Motive Driver App. Drivers can search for an asset, view its last-known location and tracking context, request a location refresh for supported assets, and get directions to the asset.
Overview
- Asset search: Search for assets by name or ID to quickly find the asset you need.
- Map location: View a selected asset’s last-known location on the map.
- Location context: See the asset name or ID, asset type, last update time, and location source so you can check how current the location is.
- Location refresh: Request a location update for supported battery-powered assets when the existing location is not current.
- Get directions: Open the asset location in a supported navigation app like Google Maps to get step-by-step directions.
- Nearby discovery: Use Bluetooth to see nearby Beacons and Asset Gateways, compare signal strength, and identify the correct asset.
- Clear empty and error states: If an asset has no location data, its location is temporarily unavailable, or it has been removed, the Driver App provides this information clearly instead of showing a blank screen.

FAQs
Is the Driver App location of an asset always real-time?
Locate Asset shows the latest location available for the asset. The last updated time and location source help you understand how recent the information is and how it was reported. A location can be stale or approximate, depending on the tracking source.
What does the location source mean?
The location source label identifies how the location was reported. For example, by an Asset Gateway, Beacon, cellular network, or another supported source.
Can I refresh an asset’s location?
If the selected asset supports location refresh, tap Refresh Location. The Driver App shows a refreshing state while it requests a newer location. Location may take a few minutes to get updated. If a newer location is not available, the app continues to show the last-known location.
What is the Nearby assets section?
When Bluetooth-assisted discovery is enabled for your fleet, the Nearby assets section lists supported Beacons and Asset Gateways detected over Bluetooth. Other available assets appear in the Other assets list. Nearby discovery requires Bluetooth to be on and the app to have the required Bluetooth permission.
What if I do not see an asset in Nearby?
The asset may be outside Bluetooth range, Bluetooth may be off, or Nearby discovery may not be enabled for your fleet. Search for the asset in the Other Assets list to view its last-known location, if available. If the asset comes within Bluetooth range, it may then appear in Nearby assets.
What do the signal-strength labels mean?
Signal-strength labels are qualitative proximity cues from Bluetooth. They do not provide an exact distance to the asset.
