Coaching in Motive helps fleet managers systematically address unsafe driving behaviors and compliance issues. The Coaching page centralizes safety events, speeding violations, and relevant logs so managers can review performance and conduct structured coaching sessions.
Overview
The Coaching page allows fleet admins and assigned coaches to:
Identify drivers who require coaching
Review coachable safety and compliance events
Conduct structured coaching sessions
Document outcomes and maintain coaching history
Track accountability and follow-up
Drivers appear in the Coaching list when they have at least one event marked as coachable.
Events can be marked coachable:
Manually by a fleet manager
From compliance logs (HOS violations or Form & Manner errors).
How drivers are added to the coaching list
A driver is added to the Drivers to Coach list when:
At least one safety event has coachable status
A compliance log (HOS violation or Form & Manner error) is marked coachable
On the Coaching page, you can view:
Safety Score – Driver’s Safety Score as of the most recent Monday
Coachable Behaviors – Behaviors requiring review
Last Coached – Most recent coaching date
Days on List – Number of days the driver has pending coaching
Note: The Safety Score is visible only if the driver has a score and active coachable events. |

Coaching for compliance logs
In addition to safety events, coaching can be conducted for:
HOS violations
Form & Manner errors
From the log details page, these violations can be marked as coachable and reviewed through the Coaching workflow.
This ensures safety and compliance issues are addressed consistently.
Viewing the assigned safety coach
On the Coaching page, the Coach column displays the assigned coach for each driver.
If the coach shows as None, hover over the label to view the reason.
There are two possible reasons:
The driver is not part of a group.
The driver’s group does not have an assigned safety coach.
To resolve this:
Add the driver to a group.
Assign a safety coach to the group.
Only users with appropriate driver management permissions can make these changes.
Tracking coaching progress
Fleet managers and coaches can track coaching activity directly in the Coaching page.
You can:
View pending and completed sessions
Monitor “Days on List” for accountability
Review coaching history for each driver
Identify repeat behaviors or trends
This centralized visibility supports ongoing improvement and compliance documentation.
