For fleets operating with no cell phone policies, prompt at the pump provides a secure, standalone mechanism allowing drivers to unlock their Motive Card.
Overview
With prompt at the pump, drivers need to enter a unique 6-digit driver code at fuel pumps. Fleets benefit from:
- Supports drivers in low-connectivity areas: Provides a secure alternative to mobile unlock for fleets whose drivers need to follow a no-cellphone policy, lack company phones, and operate in areas with limited or no cellular coverage.
- Flexible, fuel-focused control: Applies prompts only to fuel transactions while allowing non-fuel purchases to proceed as usual, and can be combined with the Motive Card unlock workflow for additional control where needed.
- Reduced internal fraud risk: Uses Motive-generated, six-digit numeric driver codes sent directly to drivers, discouraging insecure practices like reusing shared PINs or using sensitive numbers as PINs.
Enabling driver codes
This feature is not available to fleets by default. To enable this feature for Motive Cards, reach out to your Motive representative.
Driver code management
Fleet managers can set up driver codes through the admin card menu:
- Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Cards > Settings > Driver codes > Manage.
- Mark the checkbox for drivers with the code status as Not generated and click Send new codes.
- Alternatively, fleet managers can set up driver codes to be automatically generated for new drivers through the admin card menu by going to Driver Codes > Edit and marking the checkbox for Generate codes automatically for new drivers > Save.
| Note: Driver codes are generated exclusively by the Motive platform. To maintain randomized security and prevent internal fraud, Fleet Admins and Fleet Managers cannot manually generate these codes. |
- Once a code is generated, a driver will get an email and SMS with their unique 6-digit driver code. When purchasing fuel, drivers must enter this 6-digit code when prompted to enter a Driver ID.
|
Note: For cards assigned to a specific driver, only the assigned driver’s driver code will work for fuel purchases. For vehicle cards or fleet user cards, any driver code will work on any vehicle card for fuel purchases. |
If a driver’s phone number and email are missing, they will not receive a driver code. In that case, follow the steps below:
- Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Cards > Driver codes > Edit > Manage.
- Review code status for the specific driver.
- If it is Not generated, click three dots > Edit account to confirm that a phone number or email address is added. Without an email or phone number, a driver code cannot be generated.
Sending and Regenerating Driver codes
To regenerate a driver code for a specific driver:
- Log in to the Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Cards > Driver codes > Edit > Manage.
- Click the three dots > Generate new code and send.
To resend a driver code:
- Follow step 1 from the above outlined steps.
- Search for a driver who has forgotten their code, click the three dots > Resend code.
Transactions with Driver Codes
Transaction details reflect when drivers use a driver code for a fuel transaction. To review a specific transaction:
- Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and go to Card > Transactions.
- Select the desired transaction to review Transaction details > Cardholder.
FAQs
Do my drivers need smartphones or the Motive Driver App to use Prompt at the Pump?
If a fleet has been given access to this feature, then drivers use their Motive Card directly at the fuel pump by entering their 6-digit driver code at the pump. They do not need a smartphone, the Motive Driver App, SMS, or a Vehicle Gateway to complete the fuel transaction.
What happens if a driver enters the wrong driver code at the pump?
If a driver enters an incorrect driver code at the pump three times, the card is frozen. A fleet admin can review the activity and unfreeze the card so the driver can try again with the correct code.
