Introduction
Custom Geofence Categories allow teams to create and manage their own geofence classifications, providing greater flexibility in organizing locations and improving visibility, reporting, and alerting across the Motive platform.
What’s New?
Custom Geofence Categories introduce expanded configuration and visibility options within Geofences, without changing any existing functionality.
- Create custom geofence categories: Fleet users can create their own geofence categories when creating or editing a geofence from the Geofence Admin page or Fleet View page. Custom categories are unique to each account and are not visible to other companies.
- Category support across surfaces: Custom categories appear anywhere geofence categories are used, including reports, map filters, category dropdowns, and the Geofence Admin table.
- Bulk editing and category management: Users with the Manage Geofences permission can bulk categorize geofences, reorder default and custom categories, and assign custom colors for visual differentiation.
- Category-based alerts: Geofence Entry, Exit, Stop, Approaching, and Speeding alerts now support custom categories, allowing users to configure alerts for all geofences within a selected category.
- Live Map visualization: Geofences can be visualized by category on Fleet View’s Live Map, using the selected category color.
- Import and API support: Custom categories can be created and assigned through geofence imports and the Public API, ensuring consistency across workflows.
- Category deletion controls: Eligible default and custom categories can be deleted by users with the appropriate permission. When a category is deleted, associated geofences are reassigned to Uncategorized.
How does this help our customers?
- Improved operational organization: Users can define categories that reflect their specific business needs, such as job sites, yards, customer locations, or high-risk zones.
- Enhanced visibility and context: Categorizing geofences helps managers quickly understand where vehicles are operating and the type of location involved.
- More efficient reporting and filtering: Custom categories make it easier to filter reports, analyze dwell time, verify job completion, and review location-based activity.
- Proactive safety monitoring: Category-based alerts enable fleets to monitor vehicle activity in sensitive or high-risk areas.
- Greater flexibility without disrupting existing workflows: The feature extends current geofence functionality while maintaining compatibility with existing reports, alerts, and map views.
