Motive automatically identifies coachable events based on severity. This helps Fleet Managers efficiently coach drivers without having to review every individual event.
How it works
When a driver generates a critical or high-severity event, the event is automatically marked as coachable. Once the driver is identified as coachable, the following series of events happen:
- The driver is automatically added to the “Coaching” section in the Safety Hub for the Fleet Manager to begin the coaching workflow.
- The driver is automatically notified to review the video in the Driver App.
- Drivers can then review the event video and mark it as reviewed once self-coaching is completed.
The table below highlights when an event is identified as coachable. Learn more about how event severity is defined here.
| Severity of Event | Primary Behavior | Automatically Coachable |
| Critical or High |
Collision Near Collision |
No |
| Critical or High |
Close following Unsafe lane change Distraction Drowsiness Cell phone usage Seat belt violation Unsafe parking Obstructed camera Ran a red light Stop sign violation Hard braking Speeding over posted |
Yes |
| Note: Hard acceleration and hard cornering events are not automatically coachable. |

FAQ
How does Motive determine if a safety event is coachable?
For video safety events, if there is a critical or high-severity event and at least one of the following behaviors is present, it is coachable:
- Close following
- Unsafe lane change
- Distraction
- Drowsiness
- Cell phone Usage
- Seat belt violation
- Ran a red light
- Ran a stop sign
- Harsh Braking
For example:
- A driver generates a close following event lasting 2 minutes, traveling at a speed of 65 mph with multiple other vehicles around and a time-to-hit value of 0.3 seconds.
- A driver generates a cell phone usage event lasting 1 minute at a speed of 65 mph while also conducting an unsafe lane change on a crowded 6-lane highway.
- A driver generated a braking event decelerating at a rate of 10 mph/s.
- Speeding events are coachable when the driver generates a speeding event where the average speed is at least 6 mph or more over the speed limit for at least 1 minute.
The standard thresholds that Motive has placed under the admin settings is contributive to determining the safety events and placing their respective priority. The standard thresholds are customizable and subjective to every business.
Why is the Driver unable to see safety events on the Driver App?
- If the Share Safety Events with Drivers option is enabled on the Fleet Dashboard for the Driver, but they are still unable to view the safety event, it indicates that the Fleet Admin must initially mark that event as Coachable. Once the event is designated as Coachable, the Driver can access it on their Motive Driver App.
- Another reason can be that the settings related to coaching are not enabled. To do this, log in to the Fleet Admin Dashboard, then go to Safety settings, scroll down to the Coaching section, and checkmark the required boxes. Then, click Save to save the changes.
