Creating and Editing Geofences

Understanding the details and status of each geofence in your fleet is crucial for optimizing operations. The geofence feature in Motive’s Fleet Dashboard makes it easy to create, manage, and track your geofences, helping automate alerts, enhance security, and streamline workflows.

Overview 

Motive’s geofencing feature in Fleet View provides a centralized way to manage geofences across your fleet, allowing you to streamline operations and maintain compliance with regulations. Key features include:

• Comprehensive geofence management: Easily view, create, edit, and manage all your fleet’s geofences in one location for better control and organization.
• Automated alerts: Receive notifications instantly when vehicles enter or exit a geofenced area, helping you stay informed of any significant activity.
• Improved security: Monitor sensitive zones in real-time to detect unauthorized activity, ensuring the safety of your assets and cargo.
• Efficient bulk actions: Create, edit, and deactivate multiple geofences at once, saving you time and improving overall fleet management efficiency.

Creating geofences

You can create geofences individually, in bulk, or directly from the map using the location search feature.

To create one geofence:

1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Fleet View.

2. Click Create geofence at the top-right, or go to Admin > Geofence > Add Geofences.

   

3. Enter an address to find a specific location.

   

4. Drag the blue box to outline the geofence area.
5. Choose a shape (polygon, circle, or freehand) using the shape icons.
6. Name the geofence and select a category from the dropdown.
7. For a circle, adjust the radius (min: 0.0 km, max: 640 km).
8. Add relevant details, such as address, phone number, email, and notes.

9. Click Save to create the geofence

   

Note: You can create multiple overlapping geofences.

To create multiple geofences:

1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Admin > Geofences.

   

2. Click Import Geofences at the top right. 

   

3. Download the Geofences Import Template (CSV). 

   

4. Fill in the required geofence information in the template.
5. Upload the completed file by dragging it into the upload area or selecting it.
6. Click Import to finish.

Using search to create a geofence

1. Enter a location in the Search bar.
2. A pin will appear on the map.
3. Click Create a geofence here to start creating the geofence with the location pre-filled.

Editing geofences

Adjust existing geofences to meet changing operational needs.

To edit a geofence: 

1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Admin > Geofences.

2. Find the geofence you want to edit and select Edit from the options menu.

   

3. Resize the geofence by dragging any vertex or adjust the radius for circles.
4. Change the shape or update the geofence name, category, and other details.

5. Click Save Changes to apply updates.

   

Deactivating geofences 

Deactivate geofences when they are no longer needed.

To deactivate one geofence:

1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Admin > Geofences.
2. Click Options next to the geofence you want to deactivate.

3. Select Deactivate from the dropdown.

   

To deactivate multiple geofences:

1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Admin > Geofences,
2.  Check the boxes next to the geofences you want to deactivate.

3. Click Deactivate at the bottom of the page.

   

Reactivating geofences 

Reactivating deactivated geofences is quick and easy.

To reactivate a geofence:

1. In the Fleet Dashboard, go to Admin > Geofences.
2. Apply the Deactivated Geofences filter.

3. Click Options next to the geofence and select Re-Activate.
